The last time Maine stood in front of this old, brown door, she was preparing herself to see Alden before heading to the States. Now, a year later, she was standing in front of the same door, preparing herself to see Alden, but had no intention of leaving at all.
She couldn't deny that she was feeling hesitant after the conversation they had in his office a few weeks back, but she needed to see him again. He wasn't returning her calls nor replying to her texts and he was always offline, so she couldn't chat with him.
But despite this, never did it cross Maine's mind that he didn't love her anymore. Maybe he just needed some time to be alone, some time to think as well, but she was here now and there was no turning back.
She slowly turned the door knob leading to his condo unit and walked in. Much to her surprise, she saw most of the things in big, brown boxes. Her forehead creased as she looked around, trying to decipher what was happening.
"Maine?" She heard someone say.
Maine turned around to see who it was that called her, and saw Sam YG, one of Alden's close friends.
"Sam, ano bang nangyayari dito?" Maine felt so confused. Everywhere she looked, there were brown boxes of different sizes. "Nasaan na ba si Alden?" She asked.
Sam took a deep breath. "Wala na siya, Maine. Umalis na siya."
"Huh?" Maine felt her hands shake, as tears slowly filled her eyes. No, this wasn't happening. Alden didn't leave her. This was all just some sick joke. "Anung ibig mong sabihin? May pinuntahan lang ba? Kailan siya babalik? Maghihintay ako dito." She was starting to get frantic.
"Maine," Sam found it very difficult to break the news to her, but she had to know. "Maine, umalis na si Alden papuntang Australia. Dun na siya titira. Hindi na siya babalik dito."
Maine couldn't believe what she was hearing. No, no.. this couldn't be. Alden was just hiding somewhere. He just wasn't ready yet. This couldn't be. Maine couldn't come into terms with what was happening right now.
"Maine, I'm so sorry. Biglaan lang din naman yung pag-alis niya." Sam said, his eyes full of sadness. "Nabigla lang ako nung tumawag sa akin ang may-ari ng condo na pinapaligpit na ni Alden ang lahat ng mga gamit niya dito. I-dodonate nalang daw." He added. "I'm really sorry."
Sam tried approaching Maine, but she gestured for him to stay right where he was. She tried so hard to stop the tears from falling, but she couldn't. All this time, she thought she had a chance with Alden, but everything that had happened between the both of them had long been buried in the past.
"So ito na ba yung karma ko? Ito na ba yung karma ko sa lahat ng ginawa ko sa kanya noon?" Maine asked as tears fell from her eyes. "Handa naman akong gawin ang lahat para sa kanya eh, but I guess hindi niya talaga kayang kalimutan ang nakaraan." She added.
"Siguro, I deserve this na rin." Maine tried to smile as she wiped her tears. "I already had a diamond in my hands, but I was stupid enough to throw it away just like that, instead of taking care of it.. instead of keeping it."
