Chapter 2- Acting
“Let’s go, Rider. Don’t want to miss the bus, do we?” grinned Jas, leaning against the locker beside mine with his arms crossed.
I was currently standing in front of my locker (which, by the way, was filled with pictures of me, me and Jas, me and Lou, and finally, a big photo of Angie. I remember when Lou took it for me, as an ‘early birthday present’) trying to cram my huge textbooks into it, only keeping the essentials in my backpack.
“Hold on, Bellsworth,” I shut my locker and slung my bag over one shoulder casually. “Miss Greene said-”
“Wait, wait, wait,” Jas held up his hand, a frown on his face. “Who?”
I rolled my eyes. Obviously it would only be my best mate who had no idea who half the teachers who taught him were. “Our drama teacher? Miss Greene.”
“Ah, the hot blonde one. Continue.” he smirked at my annoyed face.
“Anyway, she asked me to see her after school. Something to do with my talent, I think she said.” I told him, walking down the corridor towards the drama block.
Jas easily caught up with me, grinning slyly. “Ooh, she wanted to see you alone? And talent of what, exactly?”
Irritably, I gritted my teeth and focused on the drama block door in the distance. “Shut up, Jas. She never said she wanted to see me alone. You can come too, if you want.”
“A threesome- I like the sound of that.” he licked his lips, just begging for a punch now, but I resisted and yanked open the doors, rushing inside.
Clearing my face of expression, I knocked on the Drama Office door, and a petite blonde woman opened the door with a cup of tea in her hand, smiling when she saw me. Miss Greene shut the door behind her and greeted me.
“Rider, hi. Come here, I want to show you something.” she led me into the main drama room, pointing at a long sheet of paper hung up on the noticeboard, filled with a lot of names. “I think you have tremendous talent in acting, and I believe that if you used it, you could go far.”
I shook my head disbelievingly. “Whoa, Miss Greene, you’re telling me I have talent in drama?” I raised my eyebrows, and I heard Jas (who was standing in the doorway) snort. “I don’t think so.”
“Really, Rider?” Miss Greene crossed her arms defensively. “I am a drama teacher, and I think I know talent when I see it. Stop convincing yourself you don’t have it. I would like you to audition for the school play this year.”
I frowned slightly. “What is it?”
She gestured towards the other side of the room, where there was a huge poster. In big, fancy, colourful letters was written...“Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s most famous and popular play. I think you’ll have a blast working with the crew!” trilled my drama teachers.
I sighed. “But, I don-”
“Wonderful!” she picked up a pen from a nearby table and scribbled Rider Smith on the end of the long list. “I’ll see you on Wednesday after school at the audition, then.” with that, she flounced out of the room, Jas smiling at her retreating back.
Hesitantly, I studied the list of names on the noticeboard. My heart skipped a beat when I noticed Angie Steeds written cursively near the top. Near the end, was written Louise Parker.
“Hey, Jas,” I turned to him, realising he was now at my side. “Lou signed up for it?”
“Yeah, she told me earlier,” he read the names on the sheet before digging out a pen and hastily scribbling his name beneath mine. “Might as well be in it together.”
