Raised

I was raised on conformist milk
With conformist ideals stamped into my brain
The words roll off tongues smooth as silk
But I think it's time to go against the grain

I was raised on movies and books
With characters who were hard to believe
But we turned our heads, now no one looks
And it's too late for them, for us to retrieve

I was raised on conformist meals
Filled with calories and notions of bad
I don't want to know what it feels
Like, knowing everyone is always sad?

I was raised on little green papers
Which used to buy me three dozen smiles
But now it's crying which I hope tapers
And life is a series of unwanted trials
