"I love you too" I shouted to my mum over my shoulder as I slammed the car door shut.

I straighten out my bright pink skirt and slowly made my way up the pathway, looking at the sheet of paper in my hands.

a + 8 x h + m - 3...... equals......

I was in the lowest maths class how could I not get this. "Aha" I muttered under my breathe as I figured out the answer in my head.

I was about to scribble down the answer on the sheet of paper with my tiny lead pencil that I found on the ground yesterday in English, when I heard the familia sound of music blasting from my phone. Grabbing the phone from my back pocket, I quickly accepted the incoming phone call.

"Hello?" I sang into the phone, knowing very well that it must be my friend Jessie. "Alice? Where have you been? I've been waiting in front of the Science lab for about 20 minutes!" Jessie snapped. "Sorry Jess. I woke up late and then my pare-" I was cut off short with Jessie's loud voice, " i don't freaking care why. JUST GET YOUR LAZY ASS OVER HERE" she shouted playfully. I smiled to myself "alright. Okay. I'm nearly there. Why don't you get set up while your waiting?" I suggested. "Okay" she simply replied. I could almost see the smug look on her face as she spoke. "Bye" I quickly said before ending the call, not even waiting for an answer.

All I needed to do was walk to the bakery and get myself some lunch and then I'll be there, I thought while stuffing my unfinished maths homework in my bag.

Not much more then 4 minutes later I stood outside my favourite bakery, it was a small shop between Starbucks and surf Paradise, but I liked it best. I slowly entered the cozy store, a wave of heat hit me as I opened the door. The smell of cakes and tarts filled the air. I took in a deep breaths letting in all those lovely smells.

The little bell above the door rang out as I staggered into the warm bakery. Scanning the store, my blue eyes met green. A tall girl stood at the counter a thin smile upon her face, she had long brown thick hair that cupped her face perfectly. She wore a plain light blue shirt with the word 'cookie' printed on the front, the shirt was matched with a pair of black high waisted shorts.

I smiled at her whilst walking towards the stacks of cakes that seamed to be overflowing. "What can I get you today?" She asked politely. I chose to ignore her questions, replacing it with my own. "Are you new here? I've never seen you before!" I whispered under my breathe.

"Yes, actually your my first customer"

I smiled at her and continued looking at the cakes. We both exchanged little small talk and before I knew it I had picked out a few treats and was on my way into the school.

"JESS" I shouted as I entered the small science lab.

"Over here" she called from the other side of the room.

"Sorry I'm late"

"It's alright. I just hope you don't mind that I started without you" she said a smirk plastered on her face.

"WHAT" I gasped

"I was only kidding. Geez this really does mean a lot to you"

"Well it is MY mums birthday present"

"I know. So let's get started then"

30 minutes pasted before the bell rang, calling everyone to their classes. I slipped the present into my bag before thanking Jessie for helping me.

On my way to maths I bumped into my favourite teacher 'miss smith'.

"Hello miss smith"

"Good morning to you too Alice. I would stop to chat but I've got a class waiting for me"

"It's alright. I've got to go to class myself but I'll see you around" I said with a sigh as she walked off.

I walked quickly to the maths classroom, hoping I wasn't late. Thank god I thought to myself when I saw that no one was even in the classroom.

I floated over to the nearest seat and sat myself down. Person by person entered the room, one at a time.

"Hey Alice"

"Morning Alice"

People greeted at they walked to their seats. I heard a Big Bang and looked over to see my maths teacher 'miss focoa' dropping her pens and pencils all over the floor.

"Sorry that I'm late. I'm sure all of you have done your homework?" She said, scanning the room for anyone who hadn't. I gulped and lowered my head.

"Alice, did you finish your homework?" She asked, glaring at me. Damn. she must have noticed my uncomfortable reaction. I was about to answer with the truth, when a small lady wearing glasses entered the room. She walked over to miss focoa and whispered a few things. Miss focoa's face fell. She nodded and then turned her head to me, with a worried expression.

The lady with the glasses cleared her throat. "Alice.....you are wanted in the office" the lady spoke. I got up slowly, thousands of questions buzzing around in my head. Am I in trouble? What if I get suspended? What did I do?. The lady guided me to the office, before telling me to sit. I sat down across from her. She could probably see the confused expression on my face.

"You're wondering why you're here aren't you?" She questioned.

"Yeah..."

"Well. I have something to tell you.....um well. She stuttered trying to find the right words.

"Your parents are in hospital and the doctors don't know if they'll make it"
