Note: I was inspired to right this chapter by Ariana Grande's 'One Last Time', because sometimes there are some songs that just perfectly describe some chapters. Now on with the stories, and stay whelmed. And OneRepublic's 'Something I need'.
Day 5
My fight with Babs seems strangely permanent. Usually, we would've made up by now. I had this huge plan that we would have midnight picnics, and pull pranks of everyone. Now, it doesn't seem like I'll ever do that again. I have one last option, but if it doesn't work, I'll lose Babs.
The night is our time. Always had been. I wait until it's past two am, before I knock on her door, for once. Like usual, she is still awake.
"Will you please talk to me?" I ask. I've tried this everyday since our fight. For once, she listens.
"One minute."I sit on a log around the fire. Babs sits opposite me.
"Ok. I'm going to say some stuff, I want you to just listen, please?" I whisper."Fine, PixieBoots."
"I was a liar. I gave in to the fire. I know I should've fought it. At least I'm being honest. Feel like a failure. 'Cause I know that I failed you. I should've done you better. I don't deserve it. I know I don't deserve it, but stay with me a minute, I swear I'll make it worth it. Can't you forgive me? At least just temporarily. I know that this is my fault. I should've been more careful." Babs keeps a straight face, but I can see a tear glistening from the moon. "So one last time, I need to be the one who takes you home. One more time. I promise, after that I'll let you go. All I really care is you wake up in my arms. One last time, I need to be the one who takes you home.""Dick...I-" Babs starts, but I cut her off, kissing her. She pushes me away. "Tell you what. Let's just stay friends for the rest of this camp, and when we get back to Gotham, we'll talk about us, ok? I just need some breathing space for a few days." Babs stands up, and walks past me, touching my shoulder.
Well, it's definitely an improvement.
Babs's POV
When Dick kissed me, it was like someone had turned on a light in a dark room you didn't realise was pitch black. But I needn't to think. I made a deal. I just have to get through these two days, then get back to Gotham.
I curl back into bed, but I can still smell Dick's aftershave. Stop thinking about him! I can feel the buzzing of Meghan in my head.
"I know you're there, Meghan." I whisper. She sits up, guiltily.
"Sorry." She replies.
"It's fine." I whisper, before falling asleep.Day 6
M'Gann's POV
"Connor! Stop that this instant!" I giggle telepathically.
"Oh come on, Meghan. It's just a prank!" He defends.
"On the second scariest man on the planet."
"NightWing barely a man. He's what, twenty? Even Wally's older than that."
"Scariest boy." I can almost see Connor frown."What's on your mind? I can't read your mind."
"Just something I was talking to Batgirl about. It's nothing."
"Well, get out here and watch this!"I pull on my hood, and hover near Connor and Gar. Seriously, both the 'men' in my life are the most annoying, and adorable people in the universe.
NightWing walks over to Connor.
"Got your message. What's the- ARRGH!" The ice water pours over him, soaking his uniform. I burst out laughing.
Babs's POV
A soaked Dick walks into the kitchen cabin.
"What the hell?" I laugh, before regaining a poker face. "Let me guess-""Gar and Connor." He finishes.
"World's greatest detective." I say, grabbing a towel from the counter, and try to dry him off. I wipe his face, and pause for a second, looking up into his eyes, before dropping the towel.
Dinah's POV
I walk into the kitchen to find Barbara and Richard standing back to back, chopping vegetables. At least their in the same room now. I walk out before anyone notices me.
Dick's POV
At 8:00pm, I'm in my cabin alone, while everyone else trains 'tactical camouflage'. AKA, hide and seek. Babs walks in.
"Didn't you go outside?" I ask.
"Um, no. What're you working on?"
"Nothing. Just some plans for future missions. Failsafes." I say, typing away. "Anyway, so when are we going to talk in Gotham?"
"W-What?" She asks nervously.
"Remember last night?"
"Um..." I scan her face. The lips are slightly larger than I remember. And her hair is too long. I wouldn't forget, I've studied her face since we were nine.
"Remember Christmas?" I say carefully.
"Uhhhh..."
"You're not Batgirl." I growl. "You're not M'gann either. She wouldn't do this. And the only person who could - and would - impersonate my best friend is you, Zatanna.""Esrever." She whispers. Zatanna appears in front of me. "NightWing, I-"
"You used magic to find my identity. I had to have M'gann wipe it from your mind. You repeatedly set me up in front of the one person I might actually love, and now you pretend to be her?" I growl.
"You don't understand! I love you! You love me!"
"That was a long time ago, Zatanna. Now, leave me alone." I say, shoving her out of the door.Day 7
We left at ten. It's been twenty minutes. Wally's already asking for a bathroom stop. I sit alone, staring out the window. Not because I no one wanted to sit with me, I just wanted some alone time. The forest zips past us. It's like life. Unless you seize every opportunity, life will fly by. You won't accomplish anything.
I sit on top of the Wayne Enterprises building. It's the beginning of spring, and it's still winter weather. There's a swish behind me.
"I know you're there, NightWing." I say, without turning around."So, we're in Gotham, and you've had breathing space. Now can we talk?"
"Sure, Boy Blunder." I say, sarcastically."Still not feeling the aster? Aren't you at least whelmed?" He says , sitting down next to me, although there is a significant space between us.
"Listen. I do like you. And I do know that I can't blame the whole Zatanna thing on you." I say.
"That means..."
"That means that you gotta make a move, Pixie Boots. You've never actually asked me out.""Well, Miss Gordon, I had a dream the other night. About how we only get one life. Woke me up right after two. Stayed awake and stared at you. So I wouldn't lose my mind. And I had the week that came from hell. And yes I know that you could tell. But you're like the net under the ledge. When I go flying off the edge. You go flying off as well. And if we only die once, I wanna die with you. So, you wanna go on a date?" He says. I grin, putting my hand in his. It's hard to believe that I can actually take him down in a fight, given that he's about twice my size.
"A. There was no reason to have a pre written speech. B. Let's leave the dying part out for at least fifty years or so. C. It would be my honour, Mr. Grayson." There's a beeping sound from his wrist.
"Right after we get to the WatchTower."
