Isaac? The unfamiliar name ran through my mind non stop since Jack mentioned it. I knocked on the door, the rain and thunder blocking out my attempt to call for the workers. Soon enough a middle aged man, dark skinned with loose blue overalls came to the door grabbing a bunch of keys that hung down his outfit and opening up the doors to the building. "Hi Miss how can I help you?"he asked his rough voice filled with a soft kindness. "Im Doctor Ryan Veils, I called Mister Ritano about speaking to some of the coroners and a mortician that work here, I work for a hospital a few towns away"I answered and he pulled open the rusty black steel caged door, allowing me to step inside. "Ill show you the way"he said smiling and pushing the big yellow janitors bin through the hallway. We stopped in front of a big steel door that separated us from the source of a smoke and rotten meat smell. "Here's were I get off, just ask for the coroners inside to help you out with what you need"he said turning left in the hallway, leaving me standing in front of the door debating wherever I should go in there or not.
I jumped back as the door swung open catching me by suprise. A young man stood in front of me, long hair that hung down sweaty and greased back at the sides, dark green eyes, a curly stubbed beard, a dirty stained white tank top shirt and his grey coroner overalls tied around his thin waist. He looked me up and down, sending an uncomfortable chill through my bones. He smiled brightly at me showing a pair of black tobacco stained teeth a toothpick settling between them gently. "Howdy"he smirked leaning against the door. The air filled with cigarette smoke from the crowded space and flies surrounded plates of rotten food and take out bags. I smiled softly as he stepped aside pulling me inside the vile room. "We haven't gotten much..guest"he said pulling a chair out for me. "The boss said you'd be stopping by" he said staring at the desk, smacking a magazine down on a running cockroach. "Y..yeah, just wanted to get some information about a old patient that I wanted to do some research about"I explained and he nodded, playing with a few pencils scattered across the desk his attention clearly not being able to concentrate on one thing at a time."Sure ask away" he replied sitting back in his seat, picking up his feet to rest on a small coffee table that I barely saw at first. "Any recent incomes of a patient named Isaac?" I asked listening closely to his respond. He furrowed his eyebrows screaming a name, soon after a older man came out. He seemed cleaner yet tired eyes and a round beer belly made his overalls tight around his figure. "Any fellas come in named Isaac?"he asked the man but still staring at me. The man pulled off his brown gloves looking down I presume to think. "No, not that I know of, only a older women before that the last one came in about two weeks ago, but also a female"he answered throwing the gloves on the desk joining our conversation about Isaac, I guess won't last to long. After a few minutes I was done with Dale and Carhos the coroners,I didn't get much from them though, except that the morgue and coroners that worked here aren't use to being used that much since most bodies are moved to different towns or buried in the families yard, very little people choose to be cremated. Afterwards I followed the bright hallway to a bumpy platform leading up to a burgundy colored door, containing the words morgue on the frame. I knocked a few times but twisted the knob letting myself enter after not getting any response. The room was freezing and most of the body chambers were opened containing no bodies, this place was close to being abandoned like our hospital. I walked through the quietness looking around for any living being. I rubbed my hands repeatedly over the naked skin on my arms. Sitting down on one of the metal chairs settled behind the metal desk holding millions of files and papers from all sorts.
A grey, wrinkled news clipping caught my eye, it was placed into a dark black photo frame and the glass was covered in what seemed to be dust.
"One of my great-great grandfathers" a clear yet rough russian accent said appearing from another room, peeling off a pair of white gloves. The man wore a long white coat like I something would wear over my scrubs at the hospital, except his shoes are shiny black formal dress shoes and I usually kept to any comfortable pair. He seemed young not entirely old yet, although you can see a few wrinkles over his fairly white skin. He seemed tired with bags under his blue eyes. "He seems like the quite successful man"I replied smiling slightl, standing up from the seat to greet the man. He shook my hand tightly, inviting me to take a seat once again. "So Mrs Veil am I correct?.."he started putting on his glasses slowly, dropping it on the bridge of his nose. I nodded at his answer and he told me his name, A Mister Seam which I presume must be a family name since I've never heard such a surname. "So how can I help you today?"he asked folding his fist under his chin.
"Well I was wondering if there was anyone named Isaac who came in recently? I asked giving him all my attention, hoping he was a bit more informative and helpful than the coroners. "Isaac?, not that I'm aware of, business has been slow these days, which is saying allot since I work in a morgue...but not to sound negative. People don't seem to die these days"he answered amusingly, standing up and heading towards a big metal file cabinet, pulling out a rather thick yellow hazel colored file. "People don't really call they're children, Isaac around here"he mumbled staring at the papers in the folder. "Why's that?"I asked scooting uncomfortably in my seat."Some old urban legend or something of the town, they all just see it as bad luck or what not"his accent flew throughout the air making my curiosity rise even more to who Isaac really is and what connection the male had with Jack.
"No, no Isaac that I can see here"he answered throwing the file back onto the table and connecting his eyes to mine once again. I only sighed, slumping back in the chair in frustration."I'll tell you what, take these papers with you, they have all the deaths and C.O.D's of the last four weeks at least, read through this. I'm gonna need this back after a while though so when your done just drop it off again."he said sliding it over to me. I almost jumped to take it in my hold but held back my excitement to end Jack's game. "Thank you so much Mister Seam"I almost chirped standing up to greet the middle aged man before walking back through the hallway, past the almost deserted streets in the rain. I was strapped in my car the heat cranked up to almost desert Celsius, taking deep breaths of stress to wherever or not I was gonna find Isaac's name in the file, throughout the very long, rainy road trip back to my morbid apartment room I call home.
I was correct by the morbid apartment, since the last time I saw Jack he destroyed half to all of my lightbulbs, it was pitch black dark and a real mess. Im not a neat freak obviously but I'm not a entire slob either, I just don't necessarily have the time nor motivation to do a cleaning spree and the fact that it will return to filth in anyway made the matter worst. I swung off most of my warm clothing only wearing my tanktop and jeans before grabbing the file taking it all the way to the kitchen. I made myself a big cup of hot, strong, steamy coffee holding it by the ear and the file under my armpit heading to my bedroom to start. Reading the names of the deceased,to find, no hopefully find Isaac's name and C.O.D.
