It started out like any other day would. I woke up to the sun glimmering through my window. I could hear my mom calling for me "Breakfast!" "In a minute" I reply, as I struggle to get quickly dressed. I bolt down the stairs into the kitchen. My mom looks over at me with a smile as I jet into the kitchen. "Well you seem full of energy" she remarks. "Ahe yeah, well it is the first day of summer after all."
Im Everett, I had just finished my last year of high school. My family and I live in a rather small town that not many people even know exists.
"Yeah I guess so." She says as she continues stirring the scrambled eggs. "Where's Dad?" I say as I munch on a piece of bacon. "Your father had to go into to work early this morning" she's says, seeming a little frustrated. "Again.." I say, with a sigh. "Yup, but keep in mind your father works for the police department" she replies. "Yeah, but sometimes I just wish he could take a break every once and a while." I say.
My dad has been a police officer since the day I was born. He taught me a lot of cool stuff. I hope to follow in his foot steps and become a police officer too. Either that or join the army, But I'm still undecided. Plus my mom isn't to keen on me joining the army."This weekend I planned a camping trip with Alex. Is that ok with you" Me and Alex have been planning this trip since the beginning of our senior year. Me and her have been best friends since the 3rd grade. "Well I guess why not. Just promise me you two will be careful, and stay safe" she says. With a smirk I reply "We'll try" she gives me a concerning look. "Don't worry we'll be fine" "Okay if you say so. When are you and Alex leaving" "This afternoon" I say as I chew on my toast. "We'll be gone for the weekend and back Monday" "Okay" she says "Do you need a ride" she says, looking over at me. "No I'm fine, Alex and I were gonna ride our bikes with our packs" "oh alright" she says.
I head into the living room and sit down on the couch. The news is on, 'Tensions between the United States and North Korea continue to grow. Government officials say we may be on the brink of war' This is all that the media has been talking about the past few days. Ever since a US drone was spotted and shot down over North Korea. Some say its gonna lead to war, but I don't think it will. I look down at my watch, 9:20. I'm supposed to meet Alex at the center of town at 9:30. "I gotta go mom, I'll see you on Monday. I love you!" I yell. I hear my mom shout back "Okay be safe. I love you too"
I grabbed my back backpack that I packed the night before. I threw in your basic essentials, a change of clothes, sleeping bag, rain jacket, head lamp, my lighter, hammock, and of course my hunting knife my father gave to me for my birthday a few months ago. There's still plenty of room in the pack for some food and water that me and Alex are gonna get uptown before we leave. I head around the side of the house to the garage to grab my bike.
I start down the road on my bike. After a few mins I see Alex hanging around in the park with her bike and gear. "Hey Everett! Where have you been" she says, flailing her arms in the air. "Hey sorry, lost track of time, whats up" I say "I got the rest the supplies we needed" she says, lifting her bag in the air. "You remembered the tent right?" I say, raising my eyebrow. "Of course, what do you take me for.. an idiot" she says smirking. "Sometimes" I say, with a chuckle. "Alright alright, lets get going" she says. "Alright then" I say.We hop on our bikes and start towards the woods thag we plan to camp out in. Once we get to the edge of the woods, we start to walk our bikes. We walk down the winding trail that leads us to this little rocky cave. We stash the bikes here in the bushes. We wont be able to bring them the rest of the way. We begin hiking down into the valley. We've been probably been walking for about 4 hours. Finally we reach a stream. There a big old tree that drapes over the rivers edge. "How about here?" I say. "Eh I guess it'll do" Alex says. No one ever comes out here, usually its me and Alex that wonder the through the woods. Most of the others around our age choose to stay at home and party. Not really Alex and mines preference so we go out here. "Rock paper scissors for who has to set up the tent?" Alex says as she drops her bag down next to a tree. The sunlight is warm and the breeze is nice, all there is to hear is the wind and the stream. "Sure" I say. After 3 attempts, I still end up beating Alex. "Dammit, how are you so good at this" she says, unpacking the tent. "I don't know luck maybe, or just skills" "Yeah okay"
I start to hang my hammock up in the tree. After a few hours pass, I start a fire. As I sit around the fire, watching the sun drop set beneath the horizon. I hear Alex muttering to her self on the river bank. "Whats the matter" I say to her. She turns around towards me on the rock he was sitting on. "I've been trying to catch fish for hours. And I haven't caught crap" she says. I laugh and head over to my hammock and lay down. "Well maybe you should just go get some rest." I say over to her. "Fine, I'm tired anyways" she says. He settles down into her sleeping bag for the night, while I decided to sleep out in my hammock. I lay there staring up at the sky seeing all the stars. I see a few streaks of light fly across the sky. "Huh, must be a meteor shower" I mutter to my self. I curled up and went to sleep. Only there was one thing wrong, that meteor shower wasn't a meteor shower, And those meteors weren't meteors.
