Its must be around midnight when I really start to feel drowsy. My mind is somewhere else. Everything that has happen, and how fast it happened. Its just so hard to comprehend.
I put the gun aside hours ago. Still in reach but put aside. I didn't want to have to hold it any longer, especially after.. after I shot him.
I keep telling my self "you did the right thing, you did the right thing" but I can't shake the memory. It happen all so fast.
I get up and start to look around to keep my mind off of it. There's a flashlight in Alex's pack. I grab it and click it on. There's a Clump of boxes in the corner of the room. I don't expect to find anything extraordinary seeing how we're in the storage room of a super market.
With the flash light in my mouth and one hand on the box and the other one with my knife, I slowly cut open the box. Just as I expected nothing special, just box's of cereal.
After a while of looking around I had found some canned food we could use, and a spare flashlight. I notice a ladder coming down from the ceiling that leads to a hatch. Most likely the entrance to the roof.
I drop all the stuff I found and crawl up the latter, hoping to get a good view of the town from up there. I slowly open up the hatch and make my way to the edge of the roof.
And what I saw was something I couldn't comprehend.
Everyone in town was rounded up in fenced off areas as if they were like cattle. They were all being shuffled towards the helicopters that me and Alex saw coming in landing and taking off.
Its seem as if they're evacuating everyone, no couldn't be. I notice a group of soldier's going around with clip boards. It appears almost like they're evaluating the people. The soldier's stop by a much older man. The man with the clipboard signals the other to soldier's to pull the old man out of the group. They take the man to an ally way out of site of the others. I crawl over to the other side of the roof to see what they were doing.
There's a troop carrier with a tarp draped over the back. I can't see whats inside of it. They push the old man the to ground. I clench my fists, trying to avoid letting my anger get the best of me. I sit still and stay quiet. One of the soldiers raises his gun and pulls the trigger. *POP* The bullet hits it's mark right in between the eyes of the man. Leaving a blood splat on the alleys wall. The two soldiers then heave the body into the back of the truck.
I sit there in shock and aw of what I just witnessed. I crawl back to the other side of the roof to where I can see everyone else. Its dark and they have spotlights on over everything. Everyone else who seemed able bodied was huddled onto the choppers and the not so healthy were dragged to the alley. Assuming that they faced the same fate as the old man. After watching this gruesome selection process for what seems like 20 mins, I decide to go back down to check on Alex. When I get back down I go and sit over by Alex like I did before. I sit staring at the wall with all the images of what I just saw running through my head. Something just clicks in my head. I look over to Alex and see her laying down sleeping. I don't know why I do but I just lay down next to her and wrap my arm around her. I feel her hand reach for mine, and I clasp my hand around hers and we just lay there in silence. After about an hour. I hear a creak of the door. Me and Alex quickly jolt up. I reach for the gun but its too late. A large man runs over and stomps his foot over the gun. I slide backwards over the Alex and grab her hand. "What do you want from us?" Alex cries out. The man lowers his gun "Are you two Americans" the voice says, with a strong southern accent. "Y-yes, we live here, in this town." The guy holsters his gun and then picks up mine. He reaches out a hand to me. I grab it and he pulls me up. "Corporal Davis , who may you two be" A rush of relief flows through me knowing he's one of us, an American. "Im Everett and this is Alex" Alex gets up and grabs my arm. "Are there others with you?" Alex says to Davis. "No, unfortunately. I'm a pilot for the United states air force. I got shot down above your little tow- well what used to be a town. How did you escape capture like the others?" "Well me and Alex had left for camping the day prior to all this. We got ambushed in the woods and Alex got shot. After that we came here." I say. "Whats happening" I hear Alex say. The Corporal stops and pauses "America is under a large scale invasion, and we're not fairing to well" He says. "H-have you seen what there doing to all those pe-people out there" I say, with a shaky voice. "Yes, they're separating people, from those who can help them and those who are useless to them." He says. "What are we supposed to do then." Says Alex. "Well nothing, at least not with more people to assist us. The best thing we can do is to head twenty clicks east of here to a military base, and hope its not over run" He says, checking his watch. Alex stares at him in wonder to what he just said "umm how far is twenty clicks exactly?" "It's about 16 miles" Corporal replies. "How are we gonna walk that far." I say. "Simple" Says the Corporal. "We drive." "With what car exactly" Alex says. "Well that's step one, acquiring a vehicle. There's plenty left around." He says. "well then, its settled. We'll drive there. So Corporal, when do you plan on heading out?" I say. "At 0600 hours, right before sun rise." " which is..." "6:00" he says, in a stern voice. "Until then rest up" The Corporal says. Turning around, beginning to head to the back corner of the room. "One more thing Corporal, can I have my gun back?" He stands there for a second and then grunts "Alright, I'll give it to you, even though its against protocol. Just promise that you will not fire this weapon unless I say so. Do you understand." He stays, strictly. "Yes sir." I say. He hands me the gun and I stick it back into my waist band. Me and Alex go back to lay down. This time I lay facing away from her. She's swings her arms around around me and gives me a hug. Who would of thought a life long friend ship result to this in such circumstances. "I love you" she whispers to me. "I love you too"
