I awake to Davis kicking my my shin. I look over to my right and I see Alex standing over me. "Waky waky sunshine, time to go" I'm starting to believe Davis is a wise ass. I get up and grab my pack. I had found a new one the night before. Its small but carries what I need. Davis draws his gun and slowly opens up the back door of the storage room. The suns not even up yet. "Wait here" he whispers. Me and Alex wait by the door way for a couple moments and then Davis comes back into the door way. "Its clear, follow me." We begin our trek down the alley way. Davis has his gun drawn but I keep mine holstered, remembering what he told me. We stop at the end of the alley right before the road. Davis stops to see if its clear to cross. "Go go go" he says.
We make our way to the outer part of town. We spot a gas station with a large pickup truck parked at one of the pumps. "There it is, our ride" Davis says. "Well alright then" we cross the road to the gas station. We all climb into the truck. "There's no keys" Alex says. "Don't worry, we don't need keys." Davis reaches under the steering dash and rips open a panel. He grabs two wires and sparks them together. The truck turns over but doesn't start. I hear a large truck coming a distance. "Quickly" I say. "Hold on kid, give me a sec." He sparks the wires again, but still the truck won't start. Now I can hear the diesel engine roaring in the distance, heading towards us. Davis sparks the wires once more. This time the truck turns over letting out a huge roar as the engine starts. He quickly twists the two wires together. I see it, a huge camo troop transport truck and a Humvee barreling down the road towards us. They bare the flag of North Korea on their vehicles.
Davis throws the truck into drive and steps on it. The acceleration pushes me and Alex into the backs of our seats. I turn to look at the trucks behind us. They've obviously seen us because now they're picking up speed. "Crap, they're following us" I say. "Do you know any back roads we could lose them on" Davis says, focusing on the road. "There's a dirt road that loops through the woods, we could take it but its real rough." "Well that seem good enough for me. Where is it?" I gun shot blast past the truck hitting the mirror. "Take a right here!" I yell. Davis yanks the e brake sending the truck side ways into the corner. He steps on the gas and we blast down the dirt road. Its narrow but we'll make it through. The trucks are still following us. More gun fire blast towards us. One shattering the rear window. Davis yanks the wheel taking the next corner, sending the truck into a power slide, yet he keeps control. I smile a bit, as odd as it may be. Blasting down the road kinda reminded me of the rally racing I liked to watch on tv. I snap out of my day dream quickly, as a bullet snaps by my head, grazing my ear. I grunt in pain. I cup my hand to my ear. Its only bleeding a little bit but my ear still rings.
The trucks fly's into the air as we crest a small hill in the road. The truck comes down hard. Jolting me from my seat. Davis hands his gun back to Alex. Alex looks at it as if its the strangest thing she's ever seen. Davis shouts to us "SHOOT BACK DAMMIT SHOOT BACK!" I pull out my and pistol. Alex and I start shooting towards the trailing trucks as where jolted by every bump. Our bullets pepper the hood and wind shield of the Humvee. The trucks hits a huge bump and I lose grip of my gun. It fumbles into the back of the pickup truck. I turn to Davis, who's quickly navigating his way down the dirt road. I turn back to Alex who's still shooting away at the trucks. Alex runs out of ammo and drops back down in her seat for cover. I still have half a clip but my gun is dinging around in the bed of pick up truck. I look at Alex "I have to go get it" I say. "Are you crazy" she says. I climb out the back window with out hesitation. I fear for my life as bullets fly by and the truck slams into bumps and rips around the rough corners. I get a grip on my gun and go to kneel up but I'm quickly sent back down as we hit a big rut. I once again kneel up, this time keeping my balance. I hold my breath and focus for the Humvee's tire. *BANG miss. *BANG another miss. *BANG This time the bullet hits its mark. The Humvee spins out side ways and rolls over on its roof, blocking the narrow road. The troop transport slams into the over turned Humvee. I see a puff of smoke from the wreck.
We continue down the dirt road. I crawl back in through the rear window. The truck hits a bumps and I cut my self on the broken glass. I take a look, trying to hide the little pain it brings. "Not to deep for stiches" I pull a bandage out of my my pack and wrap it up. Alex hands Davis his pistol back. I turn to Alex with a small grin of excitement. She slaps me. "What were you thinking! You could've died!" She yells. "I'm sorry but I had to do something, or else we could've all died." "Everett-!" Alex is cut off by Davis "Alex, Everett did the smart thing. I know it was dangerous but things are different know. We have to do what it takes to succeed and survive. No matter the risk." She sits in silence then nods. She reaches over to me and gives me a hug. "I just glad your still alive" she says.
We drive for what seems to be like another hour. Alex fell asleep in the back seat and I hopped up front with Davis. "Hey kid" he says "You did a helluva job today" "Thank you" I say.
He glances back at Alex then at me and then back to the road. "She cares for you you know. And I can tell you care for her too." "Yeah" I say. "Now I need you to promise me and when I say promise me, you'll be promising both me and her. I want you to promise that you'll do everything you can to protect her. I want you to stay by her side through out all of this. Do you hear." I look back at Alex. Her blonde hair draped over the side of her face as she lay there and sleep. "I promise."
