Metal Men

Chapter 1

A loud explosion shook the room, causing dust and debris to fall from the streets above. The Colonial Guard had located the resistance fighters, and once again it was time for them to uproot and fight back. This particular resistance squad had been out on an operation of the top priority. Their mission was to locate and sabotage the Colonial Guards weapon production plant, but when they had arrived at their destination, they found something beyond their worst fears. The weapons production plant was exactly where they had expected to find it, but the weapons being created were more advanced than anyone could have predicted. The Colonial Guard had moved on from just building more advanced firearms. Even the reports of mechanized attack suits had been an understatement. The Colonial Guard had resorted to integrating their attack suits with their soldiers, creating biomechanical monsters! The attack suits that the resistance had previously encountered, although difficult to take down, did have a weakness – their human controllers. This had allowed the resistance to destroy the suits by taking out the pilot. These new cyborgs on the other hand, didn’t seem to have any visible weakness. They were almost perfect killing machines – no need for a control interface, instance reactions to the soldiers inputs, no need to rest – simply unstoppable.

It was vital that the squad made it back to the resistance HQ to pass on this new intelligence, even though they had no idea of how to stop them. They had thought that they had managed to escape the facility undetected, but it seems that the cyborgs had been tracking them since they left. Being followed by the attack suits would have been awkward to deal with, but the loud clunking noise of the servos would have given them at least some notice. The robotic soldiers they had previously encountered would have been easier to deal with – they followed orders directly to the letter without any thought at all. If you were to cross a river, the robots would follow straight across, shorting themselves out in the process. But these cyborgs, they were different. With the life experience of some of the Colonial Guards top men, they knew how to create traps, and how to avoid them. They were going to give the resistance a whole new problem to deal with.

 The explosion from the streets above was simply to get the resistance to show themselves.  As the squad started to move from their hiding place in the sewers below, the cyborgs were closing in both above and in the tunnels themselves. They had managed to surround the squad, trapping them like a fox in a hole.
