I glowered at Phoenix before closing the door and focusing my attention on J.C. We made an odd pair, with him being a freshman and me being a senior. He was pretty cool though, and I liked hanging out with him. We had been friends since we were little, so we were practically brothers. It was a tradition for us to treat each other to pizza on his birthday.
While getting into the car, I grinned at J.C. He was kind of a safety freak, so he took his time buckling his seatbelt (who actually does that anymore?) before turning to me. Eyeing my mischievous expression warily, he raised his eyebrow.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" He asked cautiously as I backed out of his driveway.
"For a freshman, you sure cause a lot of gossip." I wasn't kidding. J.C. was crazy popular at our school, but that may have been because of me. Being the Enforcer's son attracts a lot of attention. By hanging out with me, it was only a matter of time before he climbed the social ladder. Now, practically the whole school would kneel to him. His calm and cool personality helped him make a good impression on practically everyone he met. Unfortunately, being popular inevitably lead to many ridiculous rumors being spread.
He groaned and hit his head on the window with exasperation. "Whatever you've heard isn't true. I swear."
"I don't know, it sounded pretty believable." I teased.
"Don't even tell me what it was."
"I'd listen to you, if it wasn't for the fact that you were caught making out with my girlfriend."
His head whipped around so fast that I'm surprised he didn't get whiplash. "What?!"
"Apparently, Rachel Gregory walked into the science lab today after lunch and found you too sucking on each other's faces." My tone told him that I wasn't buying the story, I was just messing with him.
"Please tell me people aren't actually believing that."
I winced. "You've been going to Creed for a few months and you're used to the people who go there. Do you think they believe it?"
"But I would never kiss Ashton! I haven't even kissed any girl for that matter. What makes them think that I would go and make out with her?"
"I know." I replied thoughtfully. "A hot girl like her would never make out with a guy like you."
J.C. snorted. "You do realize that people say I look like you, right?" It was true. Everyone's hair turned a different shade of brown when they were injected, but J.C. and I had the same blackish color. Even before we were injected, our hair had been that way, although his hair turned a little darker with his injection. "And you're supposed to be nice to me on my birthday."
"I'm already taking you out to dinner."
"How romantic."
"Hey, it's not like you had anything better to do."
"Excuse me, I had many things I could have done instead!"
"Like hanging out with your sister? Please." The atmosphere in the car changed immediately. J.C. didn't answer, so I could tell that he was annoyed. In case you haven't noticed, I couldn't stand his sister, Phoenix. For some reason though, he loved her, and he hated it when I insulted her.
Finally, he said something. "Let's not do this again, Parker."
"Do what again?" I asked innocently.
"You know dang well what I mean." I rolled my eyes at J.C.'s refusal to cuss.
"I just don't understand why you give her the time of day, that's all."
