"Maka we need to keep going!"

"Soul, we can't you're hurt. You know what happened last time! I can't risk losing you to the madness." Their enemy stood a few feet away from them preparing to attack again. Maka watched intently while arguing with her weapon.

"Maka, listen to me, if we don't finish this guy off, he'll destroy the DWMA and everyone in his path. Hurt or not, I need to help you end this." Maka grudgingly agreed with her weapon, yet worried of his condition all the same. Soul was weakening and slowly being pulled into the madness, but his fear for his meister's life was aiding his will in the fight against himself. He would do anything for her, even risking himself in the process. The foe they were up against was far too powerful for them to defeat normally, and Soul knew what had to be done.

"Maka, let's do it. Devil Hunter." Maka slashed her scythe but the enemy's defense forced her backwards; her shoes skidding across the pavement. Maka used her scythe to stop her movement. She knew he was right, but she also knew he never thought about the consequences of his actions. There was a chance Soul wouldn't be the same after this. He had been fighting the madness ever since he found out about the black blood inside of him, and every soul resonance slowly made him lose his grasp on reality. Maka wouldn't know what to do without him.

"Soul, are you crazy? We can't resonate our souls to that level without risking your own safety and sanity." Maka could hear his thoughts and his stubborn attitude wouldn't let this go. Maka mentally punched herself as she prepared to resonate with Soul. One slice Maka. She took a deep breath. Soul will be just fine. He always is.

"LET'S GO SOUL RESONANCE. DEVIL HUNTER." The scythe almost tripled in size and glowed brightly. Soul played his piano with the demon watching. Soul ignored the demon's presence and made sure Maka had enough power to destroy their enemy. He slammed the last key as Maka spun once; their enemy being finished off. The demon spoke to Soul and offered immense power, higher than what he can do with just this piano. Soul denied, of course.

"The pain you feel could be only temporary. Allow Maka in. Let her bathe in the power of the black blood that you depend on so dearly. You two would be unstoppable." Soul didn't feel pain just yet, once turned back he would feel the effects. He always felt it. Not feeling this pain anymore and not having to let Maka worry so much was intriguing, but for once he would consider the effects of his decisions. The demon could sense Soul pondering his offer and that was enough for him to be satisfied. Soul began to lose consciousness while the demon's last words were faintly heard. It's always a pleasure, Soul Eater.

Soul transformed into his human form bruised and covered in blood. He was shaking, with his breathing unsteady. He hadn't given in to the madness, but one more second in his weapon form and he would have been done for. Maka sat him against a marble pillar and knelt by his side while attempting to get him to wake up. Black blood began to slowly move down his face from a cut on his head, as Maka attempted to clear the blood it spiked and stabbed her fingers. She was increasingly nervous at Soul's condition. What did he do differently this time? Maka was unsure of what to do, she had never seen Soul in a state like this before. If she did not get him to snap out of it, he would never make it back to the DWMA.

Maka grabbed Soul's face with both hands. She winded her arm and swung to slap Soul across his cheek. He blinked, coughed up blood, and Maka felt the slightest bit relieved. He was conscious still, yet she wasn't sure for how long and what would happen if he stood this way. He opened his eyes but the area around him was unfamiliar. Everything was dark and foggy, but Soul remembered coming here on a clear morning. He blinked hard and the area was normal, what it was like when they first got there except now with the enemy's soul awaiting the two nearby. He rubbed his eyes to make sure he was not hallucinating, yet with every blink the scenery would change. He kept his eyes shut, still not saying a word to Maka, which did not help her. She called his name repeatedly with no avail. It was as if he couldn't hear her; although right next to him she felt miles away. Maka pleaded with him to stay with her, not to give in to whatever was going on, and to hear her. He felt her next to him, he felt her shake his arms and shoulders but couldn't do anything but laugh. Maka's heart dropped. Had the madness taken him over? How is she supposed to help him? What is she supposed to do? She was afraid for her weapon and she had no way to contact anyone to aid them. She stared at Soul with tears in her eyes.
