Warmth

A small smile appeared on my face as we went to get rice rolls together at the other side of the shop.  He gave me the star and apparently he was good friends with the girl at the shop so she let him put it there for a few minutes. 

" Do you like this place?"  He asked me. 

" Mmm..."  I looked up and saw him dreamy hazelnut eyes. 

" Okay, glad to hear that."  

We went out after eating and found snow slowly drifting down.  We walked, hand in hand.  I leaned against him and rested my head on his shoulder.  He looked down and smiled.  Warmth spread all over me as we cycled back to the park. 

The park looks more different when most of it's covered in snow.  On the lake was a thin layer of ice.  Some children were trying to skate on it but failed, the instant someone stepped on the thin ice, the ice cracked and no one wanted to go again. 

But they were all laughing, throwing snowballs at each other and trying to build snowmen with the small amount of snow. 

Suddenly, there was a high pitched scream.  Then all the children gathered around a side of the lake to see what was going on.  We rushed over and saw that a small girl had fallen into the lake. 

" Please help us,"  A tiny boy tugged at my jacket sleeve.  " We are to scared to go down there." 

I nodded and went to the lakeside as fast as I could.  The children gathered around me and formed a circle to get a better view of what was happening.  I stretched my hand to the failing girl and she caught it. 

" Hold my hand tight."  

And with a pull, I pulled the girl's upper body out of the lake.  Nathan went to my side, took her waist, and lifted her up.  

He put the shivering girl onto the grass and gave her his jacket.  She was too cold to say thanks but we suddenly heard someone behind us shouting. 

" Tanya!  Tanya!  Baby?"  

The girl heard it and ran to that direction, tears streaming out of her black eyes. 

" Mommy?  I'm here!" 

The woman who we identified as Asian approached her and started scolding her. 

" You shouldn't go play near the lake!  It's dangerous."  But soon stopped when she saw the tears. " Awww honey, it's okay. Just promise me you won't do it again."  

The girl nodded.  The lady turned to us and thanked us. 

Nathan turned to me, shivering.  I unzipped my jacket and put half of it over him.  He then planted another kiss on my forehead and we walked away from the crowd of children.
