The Boy Next Door

Chapter 2 - Neighbors

Jade's POV

"Um. Hi." He laughed. "Sorry if I startled you."

"I-I'm sorry." I shook my head, "I'm still trying to figure out as to why you're here!"

"Well. I got here from my mum. See. When a man and a woman get married.."

"No, Alfie!" I hit him on the shoulder, "Not that! I meant like. HOW. Did you get HERE? As in-my porch? I thought Jack dropped you back off home."

"But.." He looked to the right, and pointed. "He did."

"You live right there?" I pointed at the house directly to the right of mine, "That house. Right there?"

He laughed, "Yes. That one."

"The one with the lit porch light?"

"Yes. The one with the lit porch light."

"Oh." I smiled, "Well what's up?" I rested my arm over my head. But then I realised how awkward that was, so I just scratched my scalp instead. It only made him laugh.

"I was just asking if you had like a spare candle or something I could have."

"A candle."

"Yeah. A candle."

"Why?"

"Well the lights kind of went out. And. I can barely see a thing in there. And. I've got no candles. So I figured I'd ask you for one."

"Oh. Uhm. Surely! Just. A. Wait here." I ran down the hall, and grabbed a candle out of my room. I rushed back to Alfie, and handed it to him, "There you go."

He smiled, chuckling at me. "Thanks." He pulled out his phone from his back pocket, "Hello-Yes-Okay, Zoe-Yeah I've got the candle-Okay. Okay bye." He looked at me, "Looks like i've got to go. Bye, Jade."

I blinked twice as he walked away, "Bye."

And in that moment, as I shut the door. I realised. I had a crush on my cousin's boyfriend.

She said they weren't dating, but I could hear it in her voice as Alfie answered the phone. She was head over heels for him. And I? I'm just a garden gnome. I have to sit here, and watch everything happen. She always talked about him, and dragged him everywhere with her. And. I'm just here.

What am I saying? I've only met him today. Or. Have I? How could I not have known that he lived next door?

Alfie's POV

I turned on all the lights, as soon as I opened the door. Zoe ran up to me, "So.. How did it go?"

I held up the vanilla scented candle, "I got the candle. Is that good enough?"

"The candle. Just the candle." She looked at me with a deadly gaze. "That's it?"

"I-I got nervous!"

Zoe punched my arm jokingly, "Nervous my arse, Alfred! You've always told me that you had a massive massive crush on the girl next door, and I'm giving you the excuse to talk to her.. Hell, I introduced you to her! Go ask her out!"

"I-I don't know why, but I just froze! Like. All I could do was stand there and smile at whatever she said."

Zoe smiled at me, "You like her a lot don't you."

I smiled, feeling my cheeks blush. "I-I don't know. I've only ever talked to her today."

"Oh! Look at my best friend. Having a little crush on my cousin. It's so cute. And.. Convenient I suppose. Ironic actually."

"Ironic?"

"Yeah. Well look at it. You've always happened to have a crush on the girl next door. And the moment you told me, I told you exactly who she was because I'm related to her. Ironic isn't it?"

Jade's POV

I rested my head against my pillow, my fuzzy pyjamas comforting me as I nuzzled the blanket against my cheek.

I then turned, to look up at the ceiling. The moonlight peeked through my window, casting a small shadow.

I could only think about my day. I analysed it.

Let's start.

One. It was my birthday.

Two. My cousins came to pick me up.

Three. I was introduced to their friends.

Four. One of them struck out to me.

Five. I spent the day with him.

Six. We went to a One Direction concert.

Seven. We ate dinner.

Eight. I was dropped home.

Nine. He came to visit.

Ten. I gave him a candle.

Eleven. I realised. He wasn't mine to take.

Author's Note:

I believe that this is the suckiest chapter I've ever written, and I'm so sorry. It's because I kind of had a bit of writer's block.
