The guns start up again as Sergio moves to the door. The sounds throw themselves at my brain and I put my hands over my ears as if that would drown out the raining bullets.
Kotey grabs me and drags me away from the doorway. I let him, the sound of the fight going on outside is not far from causing my actual pain.
“You have enhanced senses,” it’s not a question but I nod anyway.
“Help us!” The girl shouts up again, fear and pain in her voice.
“Kotey, we have to do something,” I manage to whisper, my voice sounds loud to me but Kotey has to tilt his head to catch my words.
He nods and I turn my head to see Sergio run out. A few seconds later the gun fire gets louder as Sergio must have appeared.
Kotey coughs slightly and my head spins back to him, my hair whipping my cheeks.
Kotey has let his bone swords out and as I watch my claws reappear. I follow Kotey down to the street below and bite my lip, drawing blood.
Two young kids are cowering near the warehouse walls, Sergio is in front of them. He has acquired a gun from somewhere, probably from one of the fallen men in around him, and is using it like a pro.
It’s not his gun – it seems too big for him – but as I watch it’s like an extension of his arm. Kotey jumps in next to him and starts fighting.
The armed and dangerous men are wearing heavy camo gear with boots like mine. Some of them are standing but less than half are on the ground, rolling around in pain. A few of them look more insulted that they’ve been beaten by an unarmed mooner and that their pristine uniforms have been dirtied.
One of the men spots me and recognition flashes through his eyes. I shouldn’t be able to, there’s a thick plastic visor snapped down over his eyes. Before he can shout out my feet are carrying me over. He seems surprised that my fist is travelling towards his face.
The visor cracks and splinters into his eyes and over my knuckles. The man is caught off guard by my punch and stumbles back.
While he’s trying to regain his balance my foot connects with his gut and pushes him down. All around us the sounds of the gun fight carry on, a few wayward bullets grazing my arm.
I hiss and back away, back towards Sergio and Kotey. The smaller of the two kids steps forward, the air around him seems to crackle and lifts his floppy hair away from his face.
His blue eyes glow and when he raises his hands I see that thin lines of lightning jump from his fingers.
“Robbo?” I ask, convinced my mind is playing tricks on me.
Either he doesn’t hear or he isn’t Robbo. The lightning jumps from his fingers and fries all of the bad guys. Then the boy collapses and the lightning disperses into the ground around him, darkening and scorching it.
Kotey gently prods the boy with his bone sword. When he doesn’t move the ghost-like boy picks the passed-out and smaller boy up.
The sound of whirring has me looking up. There are helicopters flying closer to us. Sergio and Kotey share a look and after glancing my way Kotey nod slowly.
I hear the door or something open and dark human-like shapes drop down. They seem bigger and bulkier than the ones on the ground.
Even from this distance I can smell the smoke and death that clings to them. As one they all deploy dark parachutes.
“The hunters!” Sergio does that whispered shout thing and pulls me out of the way.
“Who, what are the hunters?” I whisper looking at him.
