“What do you mean? I was born?” I ask him quickly.

Kotey won’t look at me, he seems to be concentrating hard on the trees around us. I think about going over to him and asking what he means but I decide against it.

The sound of a branch snapping makes me jump. I look around and don’t see anything out of the ordinary. The trees rustle and out steps a beautiful girl.

“Hi Crystal,” Kotey says quietly.

So this is Sergio’s ex. She’s so beautiful it hurts to look at her but her skin looks like it’s made of rock. I guess that’s why she’s called Crystal.

She walks forward and – as every girl does when faced with someone prettier than her – I start picking out flaws in her appearance. Her arms are like sticks and her lips are thin but overall I’m not surprised Sergio went out with her.

“Where’s Sergio?” She asks, her voice is strong and melodic.

“Hunters got him. He’s going to be fine,” Kotey answers quickly, seeing that Crystal’s about to ask something else.

She nods, “You guys are dead on your feet, you sleep.”

Kotey flashes her a wide grin and lies flat out on the ground, within seconds he’s asleep. I can’t fall asleep though, my mind is too full of questions. I watch Crystal and she watches me, we’re each making assumptions about each other. I don’t know what she thinks of me and I’m trying not to cement my first impression of her.

“You’re Blair Stone.”

“And you’re Sergio’s ex, Crystal,” my voice doesn’t even come off as mildly annoyed.

Crystal nods, “You know I never thought he would find someone else. Especially someone like you.”

“Like me? You mean because of my dad?” I ask bitterly.

“No, because of who and what your mum was.” My face must be a question make as Crystal sighs and starts to explain, “Your mother was a human so how you were born like this is something close to amazing.”

“I don’t get it.”

“Our scientists have found out that you can only have powers if your parents or grandparents have powers, but you’ve disproved that theory. You’re tired and worried about Sergio. I’ll take the first watch.”

I nod and lie down, turning away from Crystal so she can’t see my tears. Kotey told me that things changed when I was born.

My thoughts to turn to Sergio and when I told him he’s not a monster. I know that his situation is completely different to mine but I can’t help but comparing my past – as murky and almost forgotten as it is – to his.

If I was human Sergio, Kotey and the others wouldn’t have been tortured so badly, but then again I wouldn’t have met – and fallen in love with – Sergio. I’m sure that’s what I’ve done, we’ve kissed and now that he’s gone it’s like there’s a hole in my chest.

The tears roll down my face, Sergio could be anywhere and going through anything. The noble guy, he did it to save us.

We just have to get him back and then find some way to show him how much that means to us. I don’t know if Robbo and Kia realise just how much Sergio has given up for them.

My dreams are from the point of view of a younger me. They are simple but hard to deal with. At least I know what happened to me as a child.

From the moment my father woke up until the moment he went to sleep I was watched. I think a better name for it would be studied. I was also poked and prodded. My father did have a tiny amount of human decency as I wasn’t – as far as I can remember – treated badly. I always had food and was never hit for no reason.
