CHAPTER TWO

I can't believe it, I'd lost count how many times I had stared longingly into those eyes through a screen, and now here they were, staring back, with no screen separating us. I had waited for this moment for half my life, and there was no way I was going to let some guy in a mask come between us (sorry Oceane, but he is MINE). There was so much I would have to give up for this chance, luckily, nothing I would mind losing. Of course Jack would have some escape planned, I looked out over the water and sure enough, there were black sails. So I decided to help him out a tad. The drums beat louder and faster, "Oh father," I said airily, "I can't breathe, this wonderful gown is too tight, I think I-" with that I collapsed into the commodores open arms, feigning unconsciousness. "Help help!" he cried, lowering me gently to the ground, "Miss Taylor has fallen unconscious!" (yes, I know this fails, shut up) a crowd gathered around me as I lay there on the cold ground, waiting for Jack to make his move (haha, and they gave me a B in drama). The distraction would have hopefully caused the crowd to forget about him for a moment, just long enough. But that was when I heard it, a sound that made me go cold all over. The sound of a short drop and a sudden stop.

"MOVE!" I cry, springing to my feet, the knife that I have carried with me for ten years, yet never once used, in my hand, I threw it through the air, praying that I wouldn't miss. The crowd parted, people screamed and dropped to the ground, others jumping to the side, it seemed like an eternity until the knife reached its target and severed the rope. Jack fell to the ground in a heap, breathing heavily and clutching at his throat. "Run!" I cried, he jumped up and pulled the knife from the wood it had planted its self in. I drew the swords of two men in the crowd and threw one to Jack, who was surrounded by guards dressed in blue. As he fought them off I ran toward a dip in the roof, jumping off the platform and launching myself toward the edge of the roof, "follow me," I called to Jack, who made a clumsy jump immediately, as I was helping him up, my eyes met those of the governors. They were shocked and hurt, even though I knew I wasn't his real daughter, he was all I had for ten years, and it seemed like he was. "C'mon," Jack said, heaving himself onto the roof, I tore myself away from his torturous gaze, and started to run along the roof, jumping over the gaps, yelling instructions behind me as I ran "Run along the middle, try to slightly tilt, Duck, Jump, Keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times," About half a dozen tiles feel from clumsy jumps, giving away our position more than once. I looked behind me to see Jack stumbling dangerously close to the edge, grabbing him just before he fell off. "Are you drunk?" I ask "wha' makes you think I'm drunk?" he slurred, "Okay, your drunk," I pull him along yet more roofs, all the same colour and size, as far as the eye could see.

"Are you sure you know where you're going?" Jack asked, as we stumbled across more endless roofs, "Duh," I reply, "I know this place like the back of my-hey, that's new-DUCK!" We both slide under a metal bar that comes seemingly from nowhere. "I think we lost them," Jack tells me, kicking another loose tile off the roof, "and I think that if we keep going, there will be no more loose tiles in London, you should start a business," I reply, checking our surroundings. "At the next alleyway, jump across and slide down the white pipe on the other side, there should be a sewer opening somewhere to your left, jump in, and I hope you have another pair of shoes," I instruct, starting off toward a gap in the endless sea of tiles.

With a splash I land in the green muck that is, the sewer. I sit down, my back against the wall, gasping for breath. Within seconds I am filthy, but I don't care, I'm used to it. Jack jumps down after me and looks around, "Nice place you got 'ere," he announces, "Oh, ha ha," I reply sarcastically. He turns to stare at me intently, but I am too tired to care, I hadn't slept in months, Id been having the same recurring nightmare over and over again, yet it was still scary. "Your face looks familiar, have I threatened you before?" Jack asks, bringing me out of my daze, "Your face looks familiar, have I robbed you before?" I reply, "oh yea, how could I forget," I say, chucking him a handful of gold and papers that I had found in his pocket, and with that, I fall asleep.
