The Dance

We walked into the Stork club, a place I hadn't been since a week after the crash. I remember that day so well I don't think I could ever forget. Imagine losing the person you love most in the world, but also not knowing if they're really gone. I was told that Steve was dead even though we hadn't found a body or the wreckage to confirm it. I had to go on as if he wasn't there and I still feel guilty for that. I should've helped Howard during the search, maybe we would've found him sooner.

But right now that doesn't matter.

We were finally going to have the dance Steve was three months late for.

"Can I get you a drink?" Steve smiled at me as we walked in. I could tell he was a little nervous as someone who had never danced with a woman before.

"Sure! I'll take a whiskey." He didn't look surprised. He knew I liked whiskey after spending all that time together during the war.

We finished our drinks and I lead him to the dance floor.

"Come on. Enough stalling, let's dance." I smiled at him to make him feel more comfortable, but I also couldn't help smiling at those blue eyes.

"Alright, put your hand here" I placed his hand on the small of my back. And grabbed his other hand to hold.

"Now, I'll show you the feet but you're supposed to lead." I looked up at him and saw that he was nervous. "I'll lead first so you can get the hang of it." He smiled at that.

We spent some more time practicing before moving to the center of the dance floor. As they started playing "It's Been a Long, Long Time".

I looked down to make sure he wouldn't step on my feet, then looked up to meet his gaze. "You know you're not that bad."

"Well, I do have a lovely teacher. The only problem is she's so pretty it's hard to concentrate on actually learning the dance." I blushed and laughed at the same time.

"Kiss me once and kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
Haven't felt like this, my dear
Since I can't remember when
It's been a long, long time"

We continued to dance while listening to the music.

"You'll never know how many dreams
I've dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you..."

I looked down at his soft lips and wanted him to kiss me. I looked back up and noticed that he was looking at my lips too. He leaned forward to close the distance between us as our lips met. We broke apart and I noticed how happy he looked. While looking at him I was reminded of how much I loved him, and how much I had missed him.

"So kiss me once, then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time"

As the song ended we decided it was time to go home. We grabbed our coats and he put his arm around me as we walked out of the club. I felt butterflies in my stomach. I always did when I was with him, but I was better at hiding it than him. Steve had a soft blush on his cheeks as we walked.

"You've danced before haven't you?" I asked not believing that this was the first time he had ever danced.

"My mom used to teach me Irish dances when I was little." He said softly, remembering when he was a child.

"Bucky tried setting me up with a couple girls and go dancing.. Before you know.." He paused. It was still hard for him to talk about. Losing Bucky was one of the worst things that ever happened to him. I remembered the night at the bar right after it happened.

"But.. it didn't feel right. It's different with you." He smiled nervously and looked into my eyes.

"I finally found the right partner."
