I'm too tired for blabbing today. Enjoy!
~~
The heat was close enough to singe my hair, or it sure felt like it. I was blown to the floor by the impact, and a good thing too. Dang that was hooot! I felt like I was being baked in a microwave. Or oven, whatever. I dont cook.
I tried to get up, but there was a sharp pain in my left shoulder, and I grimaced. It's all fun until someone gets hurt.
I rolled my shoulder a couple of times, trying to ignore the pain shooting up my arm. Apparently I had hit a rock when I fell. It was nothing. It is nothing. I told myself.
It was a pretty big explosion, but I'd seen bigger. It probably went off a hundred meters or so away. Its a miracle I didn't die.
No, wait. It wasn't. No one had actually died from that. Atleast I didn't think anyone had died. Just hurt mostly, minor injuries. But, that wasn't right. Fire kills, right? Unless it wasn't fire.
I laughed to myself. What else would it have been?
"What's so funny?"
Richard, who had landed just a few feet got up and walked my way, with a major limp in his left leg. He caught me eyeing it. "It's nothing. Hit it when I fell." I raised my eyebrows, but didn't question him. If Richard said he was okay, he was okay.
He looked around, and whistled. "Man this is bad."
I followed his gaze, and surveyed what was before me. Everywhere, men, and women, started standing up, always hurt somehow. But from what I could see, no one had died since the last explosion. Huh. That's a first.
"Yeah. It's pretty ripped up." I replied. "What was that thing?" I asked mostly to myself, but Richard heard me.
"I don't know. No ones actually died..." he trailed off. I nodded absentmindedly. That's true. That thing shoulda blown us all up. I mean, even a little five year old boy could of figured that out. Big boom, whoosh, we're all gone.
I bent down. Even the ground wasn't even charred. What the heck? The grass was, well, yellow, but it wasn't exactly green before. Normally if I had touched a burnt blade of grass, it wouldve crumbled in my hands. Now as I plucked on from the ground, it just bent over. Weird.
"You noticed too." Richard said from behind me. He was also inspecting the ground.
"Yeah." I said. Fingering the blade of grass a little longer before tossing it aside.
I walked away from Richard, but stumbled a little. A tiny throbbing had started in the back of my head, and with every step it hurt even more. Ugh. I rubbed it as I walked, pretty sure I looked like a complete idiot. Ah, who cares.
"A little help?" A man in his early twenties looked at me. Sighing, I helped him up. I watched as he dusted himself off.
"Thanks." he said, with an outreached hand. I looked at it for about seven seconds before he lowered it. No surprise there. I simply nodded and walked away, like absolutely nothing had happened.
"I'm Kyle, by the way. Kyle Roberts. Nice to meet you!" He called out. I flipped him the bird and walked away.
A few meters away, a girl I faintly remembered from training lay limp on the ground. Her eyes were wide open. I considered stepping over her, but instead bent down to a low squat.
"Hey. You okay?" I asked. She moved her head in the slightest vertical movement, not breaking her gaze on the sky.
I stood up, and reached my hand down. "Here." She rolled her head over a little, and looked at me before reaching up. I hauled her up, and she stood shakily before catching her balance.
"Hey. Watch your step." I said. She nodded, and we stood there for a while.
"I'm Emily Goode." she said, finally breaking the silence.
"I'm-" I hesitated. "Jessica Bertham." I finished. If she could lie about her identity, then so could I. All's fair then, right?
"You look familiar." she said, tilting her head in a way an artist might study a painting.
"And so do you." I replied. Like maybe Marie Hampton? Why would she need to lie about who she was? I'm pretty sure she knows who I am. I'm pretty sure she knew that I knew who she was too.
"What happened? You looked pretty shaken up." I laughed half-heartedly.
"I have a bad history with fire." she laughed uneasily.
"Yeah well look around. No harm done."
Emily looked around. "Yeah.." I felt realization creep into her voice, but there was something else too. Anticipation? She was getting ready for something. Huh.
"Well, I better get going." I said, and started to turn away.
"Yeah I should get going too." she started to turn around. But she never took her first step. She fell to the ground with one last cry for help. There was no blood. A clean shot. I smiled.
The little curved pendant of her necklace slipped out of her shirt. I recognized it instantly.
I turned to walk away, not that I would've cared if people knew it was me or not, but I would prefer not.
But looking around, I saw Emily wasn't the only one on the ground. Everywhere people were dropping, dropping like flies. Huh. There was no suspicion, no sound as they fell except for the thump as they hit the ground.
I walked over to a man who had fallen nearby. For a second my vision blurred, but it was gone as soon as it came.
I inspected the man. There was still a steady pulse, and he was still breathing. And yet his hands were as cold as ice.
Weird. So, so, weird.
The blurriness in my vision had started up again, and I was starting to get hazy. Like I was looking through fog. After a while I couldn't feel my legs, and then I couldnt feel anything at all.
