"You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you."
~Walt Disney

God, the look she gave him. The look of disdain, of the upmost disgust. He'd said less than ten words to her, and that was how she replied. Lucifer, fallen angel from heaven, King of the Damned, was left speechless by Jael, a mere mortal, the ice in her voice chilling him to the very core.

Lucifer watched her as she left, watching her hips sway and her braid swing. Her steps were quick and furious as she made her way through the bustling crowd easily. He had waited centuries to finally meet the one he had fallen in love with, and she had simply written him off as nothing more than garbage.

Ouch.

"Sorry about her," Connor's apologetic voice brought Lucifer from dejected his thoughts. "She's not fond of change," He added, giving his friend a remorseful smile.

It wasn't a lie; Connor was supposed to be the one thing in her life that didn't change. He was the lighthouse in the raging, stormy sea that was her life. She deserved at least one thing, one constant, didn't she?

"It's all right," Lucifer replied, furrowing his brows and continuing to watch the crowd, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. He rolled his shoulders uncomfortably and frowned. His back ached like a sore knee in the cold; his wings we're itching to be free. "Let's just go find her and grab a seat," He added, looking over at Connor for a moment. The bustling crowd, all the excited energy, it was driving him off the wall.

"Sure, sure," Connor replied, nodding and slipping his hands into his pockets, clearly peeved at his best friend's rude - and embarrassing - behavior.

The two walked towards the already packed football stadium, navigating through the crowd gracelessly. Both boys were tall and gangly making it difficult to maneuver the thick congestion of bodies.

The entire time Lucifer's mind was racing. He would have thought getting the girl was the easy part; wasn't waiting the hard part? He'd waited decades, centuries, to meet her, to be with her. Couldn't she at least respect that? His love for her was the purest, most innocent form of love. It was as simple as that. Couldn't she see the way he looked at her?

"Sorry," Lucifer muttered as he nearly tripped over an unattended child. He grumbled as the fiend gave him a dirty look and continued to elbow his way through the crowd.

After finally making it through the parking lot, Connor led the way to the godforsaken student section; the loud, boisterous area terrified Jael, and any student with a lick of sense, purely because it housed everyone she wished to avoid, but Connor knew she would use the noise and thick cluster of people to hide. He knew she hid when she pouted, just like a child.

It took him a few minutes of searching and scanning the crowd to find the sour-faced brunette. She was sitting between two girls with corse, waist-length locks of black and golden russet skin. The girls had their dark heads together, talking about Connor, of course.

"Dammit, she's with Aria and Safie," Connor complained, knowing that the cousins were sure to defend Jael to death, meaning Lucifer was in for a treat; they were feisty and steadfast, loyal till death.

"Is she okay?" Lucifer asked, frowning as he watched the one with longer hair - Aria - wrap an arm around Jael's shoulder. "What'd I do?" He added with a soft sigh; he was already drained. Perhaps loving a mortal was too much for this immortal being.

Connor rolled his eyes and began the hazardous climb over people, bags, and bleachers to his now stoic friend. "You didn't do anything, she's just a brat,"  He grumbled angrily towards Lucifer, his face set into a scowl; Jael had successfully ruined his evening.
