Chapter 2

Bryce felt like death when he woke to the sound of his alarm blaring out the morning weather readings. Of course it was the same as always for the island in which they lived. Rain, rain and more rain was forecast to flood them out. The Water Myst that lived on the island easily stopped that, so there was really no need for the constant red warnings every morning. Bryce supposed it was for the Fire Myst like himself, who got extremely sick if not to the point of death when hit with a large amount of cold water, but there weren’t many Fire Myst who dared to even live on the island of Angerdd due to the weather.

As he slowly sat up, running his long, pale fingers through the messy mop of dark, black hair that rest upon his scalp, Bryce let out a long sigh. He heard his twin brother laughing loudly from downstairs, supposedly in the Kitchen knowing Lyle. He was probably laughing and joking with Grayson, while Sen watched them amused, but silent. It was strange how easily Bryce pictured them all in his head, happy and carefree downstairs while he lay on his bed, plagued with nightmares, from only the light, joyful sound of his twin’s laugh.

Listening a little more, Bryce came to the decision that he indeed was the last one still in bed as he heard Sen scold her two friends, something about pancake batter. If he stayed in bed much longer, he’d probably be scolded too. So, Bryce pulled his blankets away from his shoulders and sat up, shivering harshly as the cold air attacked his bare chest. It did not take long for him to decide that he had to get dressed quickly to avoid more chills spreading through his blood.

As he approached the dresser, a smirk let itself spread on Bryce’s pale face, eyebrows rising a little in anticipation for the response he’d get from blasting music out at 9 in the morning. However, he planned to do it anyway.

He turned the stereo on, grinning as the sound of Solitas’s new CD blared itself out of the speakers, filling the room with the soft guitar and low vocals of a ballad. Solitas was Bryce’s favourite band – he just sort of clicked with them, the lyrics and the meanings behind them, the melodies that weren’t really catchy but still memorable and the soft acoustics that just seemed to flow from the singer’s fingers as the strings were played.

The sound of stomping feet rushing up the stairs two at a time filled the air of Bryce’s small bedroom, a small smile gracing Bryce’s face as the annoyed, yet obviously amused voice yelled out.

“Bryce Antony White! Why are you playing this music so early? You know Solitas annoys Sen!”

“Just because she does not understand good music?” Bryce smirked, struggling to stop himself from falling into fits of giggles as a grin spread over Lyle’s face.

But the giggles were soon gone as the familiar, light footed Sen walked into the room, both her blue and red eyes glowing moodily in the dim light of his bedroom. Small bolts of lightning crackled at her fingers, her mouth set into a firm line.

“No, because this whining shit isn’t music, Bryce, turn it off.”

“Or what, Sen? What will you do if I do not?”

“I will zap you with electricity so hard that your balls will fall off.”

By this point, Grayson had joined the small congregation in his bedroom, he stood in the doorway with Lyle, one hand clamped over his mouth to stop the giggles that threatened to overflow. He knew, however, that if he did let the monstrous laughs escape, Bryce would not be the only one losing his balls this morning.

Bryce’s smirk grew, a ball of fire slowly forming itself in the palm of his hand. The colours seemed to meld together in his palm, the luminous oranges and yellows making his pale skin look even paler in contrast to the darkish room, the centre of the ball of flame was slightly blue from the lack of oxygen accessing it.
