Chapter 4

Lyle, Bryce, Grayson and Sen all sat in the waiting room at the Marble Temple. It was the only place in Angerdd that was really worth something apart from the houses in the more well off area, like where they lived. Most of Angerdd was run down and made of wooden houses, but the Marble Temple shone a brilliant white, putting them all to shame with its beauty.

The waiting room was filled with the heavy aroma of incense and perfume, the floor coated in a thick, fluffy blue carpet that seemed to crackle whenever pressure was put upon it. The four had been made to take their shoes off at the door of the temple, so the fluffy, soft fibres felt comforting under their bare soles. Grayson lay flat on his back, playing with Tess as they all waited to be seen by Kathleen. She had understood their reasoning to not appearing the day before, praying that Bryce stayed in good health, and arranged it for the next day, so here they were.

Bryce paced nervously in the room, a small bandage on his head being hidden by his usual orange beanie. The wound hadn’t been too bad, but Sen had insisted on keeping it covered and dressed so as infection would not be risked. Bryce felt as though he had a million birds, butterflies and moths fluttering around in his stomach, flapping their wings and creating a tickling, nervous feeling in the pit.  Kathleen had sounded understanding, yet worried when talking to him the night before, she had told him it was urgent that she saw into his future as soon as possible, to see whether there was time to stop the catastrophic tragedy from beginning to shape his future.

She had refused to tell him anything else.

What was the tragedy she had sensed, and why would it change his life so much that it had to be stopped? He did not understand, but he was scared. He couldn’t go back to his original life on the streets, it was too painful.

Finally, Bryce was called in.

Kathleen sat on a purple velvet cushion, a candle lit in front of her as she gazed deeply into its flame. Kathleen Heart was a Spiritual Myst who owned the temple with her brother, Lind, and claimed to be able to see into a person’s heart and future. There were very few Seers recorded in the history of the island, most of them decided to live in Lilwen, the main city back on the main lands, and most people were convinced that Kat was a fake. However, Bryce was not going to count her out just yet, not when she was so determind to help him.

He sat in front of her on an orange velvet pillow, keeping his legs crossed in front of him. The nerves had increased tenfold now, the pained look in Kathleen’s sightless eyes worrying him.

“Bryce White,” she began, her tone sombre. “Thank you for coming to see me. Now, control the flame in front of me, bend it into any shape of your will.”

Nodding slightly, Bryce placed out his hand, and began to cause the small flame to twist and turn on its wick. Kathleen watched, the bright orange flames reflecting in her white eyes. Kathleen had always creeped Bryce out, the blind spiritual Myst always looking like she was reading your very soul.

“Ah, I see.” She told him. “Unfortunately, what I suspected is correct. You are to go on a grand adventure soon, one that is filled with much pain and suffering, for both you and your friends. You have a love in your life?” She questioned, turning from the flame to look at his face.

Bryce blushed lightly and shook his head. “No, not a love, not anymore. There is a girl I have feelings for, but I haven’t seen her in a long time.”

“Alright, Bryce, what does her name begin with?”

Bryce did not understand why he was being asked these questions, however, he was not one to refuse a prophet. “S, her name begins with an S.”
