02 // autospsyThe drive to morgue was an agonizingly long thirty minutes as an uncomfortable silence lingered in the air. The only sound was coming from Liam's clicking pen as he bounced his left leg in sync. A breath escaped my lips as we pulled into the underground parking lot and I turned to look out the back window to see the white van with Carter's body inside following us. I shook my head trying to shake the emotions out before they were noticeable. Liam released his seat belt and opened his door once we were parked and I got out just as the white van backed into a spot where Carter -Case #126's body could be easily transferred.
"Harry, you're not permitted beyond this door." The stuck up, know-it-all team leader James shot a glare toward me before walking off.
"As if that will stop me, bloody moron..." I shook my head and walked into the doors, which read Autopsy on them, and saw Liam getting his tools ready.
"Harry, you know your not supposed to be in here." He didn't even have to turn around to know it was me, that says a lot.
"I'm offended Liam, I thought you knew me." I walked to where he was preparing and caught the latex gloves he threw at me.
"You've never been one to follow the rules 'ave ya?" He gave a quick smile that created crinkles by his eyes, his nose squinting in the process.
"Don't smile like that." I flicked his head and walked behind him to case 126's body. "You look awful."
"Don't deny it H, you love my smile." He winked and began to unzip the body bag which contained case #126's body. With my help, we transferred her body onto the cool metal lab table and Liam began to carefully undress her.
"Please pass me a clean sheet." Liam spoke in a mono-toned voice as he had done this process many times before. I cleared my throat and nodded as I made my way over to the metal cabinet and popped open the door. I grabbed a sheet and evidence bags and kicked the door shut with my boot. I walked back over to see case #126's bare body on the table, Liam's back turned to her as he placed the items of clothing on the table beside her. He turned back around when he heard me and took the sheet with a smile. I stepped over to her items of clothing and bagged the items, trying to avoid contaminating or moving any foreign fiber evidence. Once I sealed the bags and labelled them, I walked to the side opposite as Liam just has he folded the sheet a certain way to expose her chest, shoulders and head. He gently placed her arms at her sides on top of the sheet and paused to breathe for a moment.
"It appears she's been deceased for more than approximately four to six hours. Rigor-mortis is beginning to affect the muscles in her limbs." Liam stated as he grabbed a foam head support to hoist her head up slightly.
"Hey, look at that..." I said as I pointed at the discolouration in her around her neck. We both leaned in and Liam tilted her chin up so her neck was hyper-extended.
"You're right... These marks appear to be left by hands..." Liam said quietly as if he was talking to himself. "Grab the camera."
I nodded and walked towards where the camera was. I took off my first layer of gloves and chucked them out in the garbage before picking up the camera. I crossed the room back over to the body and turned on the camera as I did. Liam held up a small ruler and hovered it below the imprints. I peered into the viewing eye and zoomed into her neck before focusing it and taking three shots. I turned the camera off and grabbed another pair of latex gloves and slipped them over my base pair. Liam lifted her left arm and looked at the three gashes running across the length of the outer portion of her arm. He peered down at her hand to see a slash starting from her pinky finger and ending near her radial artery.
