As soon as we walk in to assembly I notice 2 men talking to our principal Mrs Delavey. There dressed like the rest of the teachers, ugly polo's and pants, but there's something about them that makes them stand out. I point them out to Jake but he just shrugs.
"Maybe there inspirational speakers." He offers up as reasoning. "I hope so. They always run over and I have a math test after assembly." I doubted they where inspirational speakers. They made my blood run cold.
We sat down in our grade's section and waited as Mrs Delavey tried to get some kind of order happening, something the grade 10's where not having a part of. You really could tell who was in what grade by the over all behaviour. The grade 8's where quite and behaved, the grade 9's while still quite but talked among themselves, the grade 10's had more guts then sense and where making an absolute ruckus, the grade 11's where to bored to cause much trouble and the grade 12's sat at the back rolling there eyes at everyone younger then them.
"That's enough!" The two men from before had stepped up to the front and taken control. "We don't have long before the next school and we need to get started. First of all I'd like to introduce you all to a couple of new laws. Firstly, anyone with a reflection is to be registered and must agree to wear a tracking anklet at all times." Um, what?! They can't do that! I can hear equally outraged muttering from a couple of the people around me. Tweedle Dee steps back from the microphone and let's tweedle dum have a turn. "If you are caught outside of your home without your tracking anklet or after curfew you will be punished to the highest extent of the law. Secondly, there is to be no discussion of reflections. If you are caught having conversations about reflections you will be punished. Thirdly, there will be no looking at reflections. Mirrors from this point in are not only useless but prohibited. These new laws will be discussed with you in your next class and pamphlets have been delivered into everyone in the city's mail box, there is no excuse for rule breaking." And with that, they stepped away from the microphone, nodded at Mrs Delavey and left.Mrs Delavey approached the microphone and timidly looked out at us all. She cleared her throat a few times, a nervous gesture I'd never seen before. "Okay so any questions you have about the new laws please ask your teachers. The whole next class has been dedicated to getting comfortable with the new rules." She paused and looked at us all. I guess she could tell how confused and scared everyone was because she decided to continue. "These new laws have been brought in for our protection! There's no need to be scared. As long as no one breaks the rules everything will be fine." She said it with a confident voice, but her whole body was screaming in defiance. Even she knew that this was bad news.
