Chapter 3

I find myself next to the pollution-choked creek. Nobody comes here anymore. It was closed down years ago; a dangerous hazard they said. I slurp the water, my jaws buried in the water. I press my head to the ground again; still no misery. I toss my head, grunting. My flap-like ears stand straight up, and I hear something odd. Happiness? In this gloomy atmosphere? I feel myself fill with curiosity. I bound over the fence, leaving the disturbed water to settle.

I prowl around the source of the joy: an empty house. Or so it seemed. I give out a small growl, my teeth glinting in the moonlight. I crash through the window, snarling. I see nothing. I hear nothing. Only a small girl, lying in the middle of the floor, her back to me. I grunt angrily and kick the girl. She gives out a loud snort, covering her mouth. The stupid little asshole was GIGGLING! AT ME!

I roar in that little bitch's face, saliva covering her face in only seconds. She rolls on the floor, laughing, holding her ribs. I feel myself redden.

"Who the f*ck do you think I am?!" I scream in human. I cover my mouth with my paws. Damn!

I feel my skeleton shrink, the wave of pain washing over me. My tail stretches and disappears and my entire body is reverted back to normal. I moan; the pain is unbelievable! I look at my hands, normal. Seriously? Why does this always happen whenever I do something HUMAN?! I look at the girl again. She's still chuckling. Ugh. I need to bring her back to the base, no matter how creepy or weird she is.

Izzy looks up from the couch, sniffling and rubbing her nose. She really liked me. The knocks erupt the door. She answers the door, the tears trailing down her cheeks. She sees me, the little girl asleep in my arms.

"Alex!" she cries, throwing her arms around me.

Okay, okay, that didn't really happen. I had to carry the little brat over my shoulders, and it took me an hour to use a secret, really old machine: an elevator. This thing hasn't been used for over 200 years! I somehow powered the thing so that it could transport me to the base. When I knocked on the door, Izzy answered it. She took one look at me and pointed the gun straight at my heart. I raise my arms in the air.

"Izzy, come on! I'm not a monster anymore!" I protest.

"How the hell did you turn into a monster?" she growls, jabbing the gun into my chest.

"It's a long story, Izzy, come on!"

"We have time!"

"Fine!" I throw the girl onto a bunk on top of another girl and plop down on the sofa, pouting. Izzy sits next to me, still targeting the pistol.

"Okay, when I was a baby, my heart speed was incompatible and I was going to die. My mom and dad decided to play cards with Satan for my life and they won. Of course, Satan got mad and cursed me anyways. Whenever I experience the death of my loved one, I turn into a devil dog, the albino naked devil dog. Ms. Phos was my favorite teacher ever. She was the only teacher who protected me from the other kids." The misery of myself attracts my devil dog and I mutter, my eyes glowing red. I let out a whimper and lie on my side. "I-I miss her."

My skeleton rattles and Izzy jumps, staring at me in fear. She drops the pistol onto the ground and gives me a hug. I feel my entire face redden and I close my eyes, hugging her back.
