"Are we almost there?" Sherlock complained as John kept driving. He was slightly worried that there wouldn't be enough gas to get them back home, because now the sun had already sank and they were driving through more and more deserted fields.
"Glad you asked." John decided, and with a swift, sharp turn he pulled onto an overgrown dirt road, or maybe it wasn't even a road, Sherlock couldn't be sure.
"Where in the world are we going?" he demanded.
"Somewhere no one can follow." John assured. Sherlock rolled his eyes, oh yes, how romantic until they get eaten by a cannibalistic cow or something.
"And why shouldn't we want people to follow us?" Sherlock asked.
"Well I don't know, I just thought maybe your brother might be following or something." John yanked on the steering wheel hard, jerking the car off the dirt road and onto the top of a large grassy hill. John cut the engine and smiled at Sherlock proudly, as if he were waiting for congratulations or something for being able to drive a bloody car.
"Wow. That was great." Sherlock mumbled. John just sighed, getting out of the car and closing the door with a snap. Sherlock followed suit, but now John was digging around in the trunk.
"Spread out that blanket will you? It's in the back seat." John called from where he was.
"Sure." Sherlock agreed, opening up the back seat, which smelled suspiciously like cat pee, and grabbed the folded out blanket.
"Fold it out in front of the car; I'll be there in a second." John called. Sherlock sighed, so much labor, but he went to the front of the car and looked around. When John had said no one would be following he was right, there wasn't an artificial light to be seen around here. Just rolling fields of green crops, making their first appearance for spring. Sherlock took two ends of the blanket and flicked it open, getting hit in the face with a couple of handfuls of rose petals and glitter. At first he thought this was some sort of sick joke, but when he saw the blanket itself his heart melted. In big, fabric letters, sewed right onto blanket, was the word Prom? Sherlock wiped his face off of glitter and all that and turned around to see John standing there with a large bouquet of flowers and a hopeful smile on his face. Sherlock really didn't know how to react, he knew this was coming, but not like this at all. He never expected anything so romantic, and now with the promise of John taking him to prom... The breaking of Sherlock's heart could probably be heard half a mile away.
"John, you know I can't go to prom with you, we'd be revealed." Sherlock muttered. If they went to prom Anderson would find out, Mary would find out, Greg, Mike, all the rest of the football team, Mrs. Pines, the nurse, the principal, and then the news would just spread like wildfire. John's smile faded a little bit, but it looked like he had taken this into consideration.
"Who cares? I can still take you can't I? I can climb your window, give you the corsage, take a selfie prim picture and split up when we actually get there. Then we can leave early and dance in some alley or something and go home, I won't dance with anyone else and I hope to god you won't either." John decided. "No one will know, no one has to know, it's still our little secret." Sherlock's heart was slowly piecing itself together, thinking about the two of them in some crappy alley dancing together, being so close and so in love, Sherlock ran towards John and threw his arms around him, and John just laughed, hugging him as well.
"So I'm taking that as a yes?" John asked.
"Yes, yes, yes, yes!" Sherlock exclaimed, feeling just like some whiney girl in the hallway, but he didn't care. The stars were aligned; maybe they really could make this doomed relationship work. He leaned back a little just to that their lips could meet, kissing John lovingly, so excited for prom that he thought he might actually combust into nothingness.
"God I hope these cows don't have cameras." John muttered, making Sherlock laugh. The two broke apart, John gave Sherlock the flowers and went to the trunk, getting two cold glass bottles of root beer and a bag of potato chips, romance at its finest. The two sat down on the blanket (after John had thoroughly shook it out), and each got a soda. They sat right next to each other, enjoying each other's company and warmth in the now chilly spring air.
"You don't think Mycroft will find out?" Sherlock asked nervously.
"So what if he does? What's going to stop us?" John asked.
"Parents will. They can do whatever they want, ban us from seeing each other." Sherlock pointed out.
"That won't work for me. They can't trap me in that house forever, and when I get out I'll never leave you side." John assured. Sherlock smiled shyly; of course he would do that as well.
"It's almost end of our senior year too." John added. "We could run away, I'll build us a house, you can get a job, we can adopt a kid, start our own life together. They don't have to know where we went, we could hide from the media and all of these losers form school, it'll be brilliant."
"you actually think that could work?" Sherlock asked hopefully. It sounded too insane really, his parents would find them, or John's, or someone, and they couldn't hide forever.
"Of course it could, and if not we'll make it work." John pointed out.
"Save up our allowance I suppose." Sherlock shrugged. That did sound like the life doesn't it? Sherlock could imagine coming home from work, John would be waiting for him with a kiss, some little kid bouncing up and down in a high chair and a small red setter puppy barreling towards him barking like mad. Yes, that would be better than any CEO mansion.
"I'd love that." Sherlock decided.
"Then we should do it, skip college, go our own way." John planned.
"What about the companies?" Sherlock pointed out.
"Mycroft and Harry can have them, those two must be all too happy to take up the stand." John decided. Sherlock smiled, no company, no nothing, just John.
"You sure do know how to plan a life." Sherlock decided.
"I pride myself in it." John agreed.
"Course you do. You and all your modesty huh?" Sherlock asked.
"Yes, of course." John laughed. Sherlock just smiled, taking another sip of the stale root beer and looking at the beautiful scenery in front of him.
"You'll never see this in the city will you?" he asked.
"That's kind of the point." John agreed. There were so many stars above them, if Sherlock tried to count them all it would take him years, in the city you could barely see the stars over the artificial lighting and the smog. It really was beautiful. Sherlock shivered slightly, he sort of wanted to go back to the car and get his coat, but he knew that would spoil the moment. Spring was nice until the sun set, and there was a breeze, making Sherlock's arms erupt in goosebumps.
"Here." John decided, taking off his varsity jacket and draping it over Sherlock's shoulders. Sherlock started to protest; now John was forced to die of hyperthermia in only a tee shirt, but the jacket was so warm and toasty and he felt very nice in it. Sherlock had seen stupid romance movies, and all they do is give each other their jackets and they always wear each other's sweatshirts, which have the last name on them. It was kind of like a brand, and now Sherlock was wearing John's last name, he was John's officially, and if anyone wanted to challenge that they'd have to go through John himself and his beat up old car.
"Thanks." Sherlock muttered. No matter how much he and John were bonding it still made Sherlock blush a little bit, not so much from embarrassment but simply because John was actually that caring to give up his only warmth so that Sherlock could be comfortable.
"You welcome." John said happily. He lay back on the blanket, looking up the stars. This gave Sherlock no other choice but to ditch the soda and lay back as well, snuggled in the jacket and leaning his head ever so slightly against John's. Now all he could see were the stars, millions upon millions of them, and all of them held more secrets than the two of them did.
"Look at all of them." John muttered.
"Somewhere up there there's a world that we could be accepted in." Sherlock decided. "They're all stars, planets, and I'm sure just one of them has a place there for people like us."
"And maybe, somewhere, there's two little aliens, with the same exact problems, sitting on their hill of orange grass and staring up into their space, and our Earth is only a spec in their sky as well." John agreed.
"My mind is blown." Sherlock decided, sarcastically. Actually it wasn't, he had thought about aliens and outer space millions of times, and the idea that they were the only living things in the universe was just hilarious.
"What would Anderson say if he just happened to drive up this hill as well?" John asked with a small laugh.
"I have no idea, but I think it would be quite comical." Sherlock decided. John nodded in agreement.
"He'd probably think it was some joke or something."
"I thought all of this was a joke too. When you first kissed me, I thought it was all a setup, planned by you and the football team to torment me." Sherlock admitted.
"Why would I ever do that?" John asked, sounding genuinely offended.
"I have no idea, but I just thought that maybe one day you'd start laughing and the football team would come out of their hiding places, having posted everything online or something mean like that." Sherlock shrugged.
"You don't really believe that do you?" John asked.
"Not anymore." Sherlock shrugged.
"You better not believe it, you know that I love you." John pointed out. Sherlock's face slackened, that had been the first time Joh had ever told him that he loved him. This might just be the end of the beginning, and this might be the beginning of the middle, whatever that could mean.
"You, you do?" Sherlock muttered, turning his face to look at John's. John turned his face as well, he smiled shyly.
"Have I never said that before?" John asked.
"No." Sherlock muttered.
"Well I do. I LOVE SHERLOCK HOLMES!" he shrieked out into the vast maze of corn fields and hills. Sherlock smiled as John lay back down, probably feeling very accomplished, and Sherlock was blushing like a mad man.
"I love you too." Sherlock decided with a smile. It was kind of obvious, of course, he had loved John since God knows when, but now he was fully accepting it, and now John was able to accept it as well.
"I guess we're on the same page now." John decided. He leaned forward and kissed Sherlock's forehead, just a small sign of affection really, but it warmed Sherlock's heart dramatically. Every second he expected to wake up from a very long, detailed dream, but then something like that would happen, a kiss, a brush of hands, and the feeling it gave him was more than anything he could possibly dream up. John was his, and he was John's, and they were almost too happy together. Sherlock snuggled closer to John, and John wrapped his arms protectively around him, kissing him once more on the lips maybe as a good night or something. Sherlock knew they weren't going to drive back, and now, being so close to John, he knew he didn't want to drive back anyway. He buried his head in John's shoulder and closed his eyes, wanting just to lay there forever, forever and ever and to forget his family his classmates, his troubles. All he had was John, and all John had was him, and the two of them could just lay there, fall asleep, and never wake up. And this world would just dissolve away into nothingness.
