The universe is rather unfair.

Enigmatic to most, who find it difficult to decipher its ways. Predict its patterns. Often, it finds itself amused by the futile efforts of those within it who believe they have what it takes to solve its riddles.

Oblivious beings they are as it would seem.

Not a one has ever decoded its mysterious ways; with each passing year the Universe gleams with pride that not a one understands its inner workings. Its a mystery that rejoices in its mysteriousness. A concept to too large for any conscious to process, it is a far and distant theory. Devised by fools to explain why life exists. Why things are the way they are. But even the most foolish of fools can never deny its infinite wisdom. Over the millennium, it has learned many a crucial lesson. And because of its generosity, it has shared its knowledge with its most favorite inhabitant -the Earth. And the Earth through its self-imposed obligations has taken on the burden to share with its inhabitants -or at least to all the ones mindful enough to shut their mouths and listen- the most fundamental rule to the game of life: Time bows down to no being, change and become anew, or be obliterated by your own unyielding need to remain a constant.

Because of these wise words the Universe bestowed upon it, our world is ever changing. Ever evolving. Like a dutiful child, the Earth listened and ensures nothing remains the same for far too long. Everything must eventually change. Become anew.

Seasons change. People come and go. The world is damaged. The world is healed. All the while, time continues to pass- and bows down to no man- as is the way the Universe always intended.

Nothing remains the same for far too long.

Nothing.

Over the years, the Universe has gleaned it vehemently refuses its lesson be ignored by the ones it deems worthy to learn, and the Earth agrees. Hand in hand they teach us all- to hang on is to become obsolete.

This is what they intended to teach an exceptionally untouched mind, on a painfully forgetful night that would sardonically imprint itself on a brain as a particularity unpleasant tattoo.

A night when the moon would long ago hit its apex and illuminate a solemn scene. A somber sky that felt too proud to permit any more resistance, would allow itself weakness enough to be punctured only by brilliant radiance of a few brave stars who dared to show their faces on this night of horrors- while the rest cowered in fear behind the veil of darkness.

This would be the night the world shifted. Changed. Became anew. At least for one perception.

A girl. Far too young, too unassuming, too naive . . . was taught that there is no black and white. No clear sides. There is light in dark and darkness in light. No matter what your personal conviction, there is always a part to play. For everyone.

And her's was not one that would leave her being pure, wouldn't leave her hands bare of the stain of blood.

The Universe is cruel in all the ways it enforces its laws.

Nothing remains the same for far too long. . . .
