CHAPTER 2:

I looked out the the window at the plain, dry land surrounding me. As I grabbed my suitcases and headed of the plane I searched for Dad, expecting him to be somewhere nearby.

But he wasn't there.

I could only see the pilot of my plane and a young man, who was taking the passengers to a small outdoor area, labelled "taxi stand / pick-up".

I sat down on one of the seats, next to an old lady, with a gentle smile. She clutched her bags closely, as though she feared someone would steal it. She glanced around worriedly, until her eyes finally settled on mine. I gave her a gentle smile and she appeared to relax a bit. She smiled back.

"Hi, I'm Elle," she said, giving a gentle smile.

"Nice to meet you. I'm
An hour had passed. He was still no where to be seen.

I didn't know what to do. The sky was getting darker and the night was closing in. The young man was the only one with me.

"Do you have anyone to pick you up?" He finally asked.

"My dad is supposed to be here. He's meant to pick me up." I answered.

"Well, you could stay at a hotel, just near the town."

"I don't have any money."

"Don't worry, it's a small business. The owners are really nice. I'm sure they won't mind you staying for one night."

I stopped to think for a while. Maybe I could call find a way to call my dad tonight, and tomorrow he could pick me up.

"Sure, that would be great!"

"My truck is over there." He pointed to a small truck in the distance. "I can drop you off at the hotel."

"Thanks."

I suddenly felt a but strange. Maybe it's not safe to let  a stranger drive you to some place that may not even exist. But he seemed nice. I don't think he'd be capable if doing any harm.

Once we got into the truck, he began driving in the direction of the sunset. I sat quietly on the seat beside him. The seats were wrecked and there was a terrible smell. I didn't know what to expect.

I looked out the window to see a couple of buildings around. The place was nothing like a normal town. The streets looked broken, just like the few people walking down the road.

"Where's the hotel?" I asked, confused.

"I'm looking for it." He grumbled. He certainly wasn't in a good mood. I wondered why.

He picked up his phone and called someone. I heard the phone ringing and then his friend picked up.

"Hello....Yes...I'm not sure if I can....yeah but...I can't tell..yeah only two..a couple of hours ago..Okay I'll meet you there."

He cut the phone.

"Can you drop me off now please? It's gets late and I must go. Drop me off here. I'll find my way."

"No it's okay. I'll can drop you. We have almost reached."

"What's the hotel called?"

He looked down."Uh..I'm not entirely sure. I think they changed the name."

I looked at him.

He glared back, then turned away.

"Please drop me off here!" I repeated. "I want to get out now!"

All of a sudden, a bright red light appeared in front of the truck, causing the man to brake.

A man wearing a blue and red uniform walked near the driver's window. "Why are you driving when your licence has been suspended?

And who is that girl in the passenger's seat?" He asked, sternly.

"I'm dropping her off," the driver answered.

"Where exactly?"

He didn't reply this time.

"Excuse me, young woman. Can you please step out of the vehicle and wait outside. I'll be with you in a moment."

I did as he said and walked out. I waited near the police car. After a couple if minutes, the police officer was out, coming towards me.

"You could have been in great danger," he said.

"Why? Is there a problem?"

"This man is dangerous. He is known as the man of a thousand disguises. He isn't even meant to be driving. His name is John and he could have killed you."

"What!?"

"This man has been accused of murdering two men. There was a recent discovery made by the two of them, would could have given them millions of dollars. They were both murdered two days ago. The number one suspect is John. The police don't have enough evidence to send him to jail, but we've been keeping an eye on him since the incident. We also have a court order tomorrow night, to solve this  mystery. "

"He said that he would drive me to a hotel, so that I could stay there for the night, and then my father could pick me up from there."

"We don't have any hotels in this town. We only have motels. Don't you know not to trust a stranger?" He was furious.

I stood there quietly.

Then suddenly it all made sense to me. John had murdered two men who had made a great discovery on something. My father and his friend came here to work on a project. They were trying to discover something. I never knew what it was, but I knew they were trying to find something.

He had murdered my father.
