It had only meant to be a simple game.

Lead the guy on for a few more blocks till they reached the back of that rundown kindergarten, then knock him out and bring him to the station.

Well she'd made it to the kindergarten part, but somewhere after that (or before) she screwed up. Outnumbered. Each holding a blade or bat or pipe of some fashion. Even with her kind of training this was biting off a little more than she could chew.

So how had she ended up in this mess?

Avantina Turen, age 16, insomniac, was out on the streets of Fuyuki for a walk. Sensei's frequent night training sessions and pushing her to survive without sleep for two days at a time had messed up the girl's circadian rhythm quite a bit. Strolls at this hour were not unusual.

What was unusual was the hooded figure following her six feet away. She had noticed him in the reflection of a dimly-lit cafe's windows just before the owners turned off the lamps and called it a day. Avantina's right hand skimmed over the Springer in her pocket for assurance as she decided to lead this idiot on a merry little chase. The longer she distracted him, she reasoned, the longer she could put off him going after someone else.

Avantina quickened her steps, made it seem like she was panicking. Her pursuer followed suit. Closer now. Further away from the eyes of passersby who might have heard a cry for help.

Avantina could almost feel the overconfident smile on his face. Had he known the reality of their situation he would be the one turning tail now.

She broke into a slow run, even panted in fear for effect. In two minutes they reached the kindergarten. Long abandoned, the kids that hung around here these days didn't come for education. So much for staying in school and not doing drugs.

Broken beer bottles and cigarette butts littered what used to be an outdoor assembly area. Not a soul was heard except for the chitter of scampering rats.

"You've run pretty far from the city, miss." said the boy, pulling back his hood.
"Not as far as you, shitface."

Avantina drew her knife. He laughed.

"That's all you got? You think you can take me on with that little knife of yours?"
"We'll see how little this knife is when it's cutting off the skin on your balls."
"Oh, is that so?" he chuckled. "Come on out, boys, we've got ourselves a feisty one."

Catcalls and wolf whistles drowned the silence like an arena of spectators. From the second floor, Avantina spotted other boys coming down; around her, a handful were already closing in.

She realized then that the overconfident one had been her. Now here she was, in a dung pit of her own making. A shudder ran down her spine. Sensei would be giving her punishment way more severe than whatever beating she was about to scrape herself out of.

The boy mistook the object of her fear.

"Scared, pretty kitty?"
"Nah," she shifted into combat stance, "just that Sensei is goanna give me a real dressing down when she comes back."
His brows creased a frown, "Get her!"

The gang roared as they charged forward, Avantina however, let her moves do all the talking. She hit, spun, cut across arms, careful not to hit a vein. Legs too if she could manage, to slow them down.

Strange.

Avantina ducked a metal pipe, decked the guy who swung it.

I could be wrong. But they seem like they're trying to push me backwards.
