I sniffled and rubbed my arms, walking headway into the brisk wind. I was cold, but I certainly wasn't going to crawl back to Jen and Eli. Considering all I was wearing was a small t-shirt and a light pair of jeans, I was practically freezing.
I continued trudging through the underbrush of the field, probably getting thorns and sticks in my shoes. It hurt ridiculously bad, but I didn't exactly care. I marched through the field heading for the tree line.
I marched for several minutes walking into the trees clenching my fists. I headed straight North not wavering in the slightest. Eventually, I came to the clearing.
A great ring of trees surrounded a small lake the overhanging branches nearly completely hanging over the gleaming, dark water. I smiled. It was way warmer here than it had been out in the open. I slipped off my shoes and tied my hair behind my head before wading into the cool water.
I floated on my back staring at the moon gleaming abnormally large in the dark sky. It was quiet and that was why I loved it here. No one knew about this place. Alex's sister, Mackenzie Grace, had shown it to me while I was watching her one day after her family's accident.
"It's so peaceful here," she'd said, sitting criss-cross on the grass.
Not even Alex knew about this place. But then again it wasn't exactly like he had time. He was walking and talking and nearly perfectly fine. But he still had nightmares. He still got quiet around the mention of his parents or the accident. He still wasn't allowed to go out in public alone or drive alone.
And yet.
I shook the thought out my head and ducked my head under the water, immersing myself in the silence.
The trees rustled off to the side, the darkness of the water hiding me from view. A man, soaked in blood, came into my sight. I could feel my eyes widening as a woman joined him tossing her blood soaked hair back behind her shoulder. The shock overtook me and I suddenly realized I wasn't breathing.
The darkness swallowed me up, and the last thing I saw was hands lifting me up into the light.
