When Ellington woke up the next morning, the sun was shining through his window and his girlfriend and best friend were on either side of the bed staring at him.

“Uhh…” he started. “What are you guys doing?”

“We were waiting for you to get up.” Kelly said simply.

“Umm… why?”

“It’s noon, dude.” Rocky said.

“What?” He asked. “Are you sure?”

Rocky pulled out his phone and showed him the time, 12:07.

“Dang…” Ratliff said.

“Yeah,” Kelly replied, “We figured if we creepily stared at you, you would wake up.”

“Alright, well it worked.” he looked between his two best friends that were still looking at him. “You guys are so creepy.” he looked around the room to see if anyone else was there. When he saw no one else he asked, “OK, so when exactly can I get out of here?”

“Well,” Rocky began to explain, “You had a really bad coughing attack last night, so Dr. Sprock wants to keep you for at least an hour after you wake up so he can make sure the antibiotics are working correctly or else you may have to stay an extra day.”

Oh yeah, he thought, that explains why I‘m so weak… “No way.” he said, “There is no way that I’m staying here another day.”

“Ell,” Kelly said, trying to calm him. “Dr. Sprock knows what’s best for you. And you have to listen to him if you want to get better.”

“Alright, well I’m awake and I’m fine. So the faster I see the doctor, the faster I can get out of here.”

“OK then.” Rocky said, standing up. “I’ll go let him know you’re awake.”

Kelly watched him leave the room before turning to Ellington and seeing him staring at the ceiling. “I didn’t mean to make you upset.”

“I just don’t like the thought of being in here any longer. It freaks me out.”

“I know, but if it’s what’s best for you-”

“I know, Kelly.” he looked into her beautiful eyes. “I know.”

“Okay.” she got quiet.

After a minute, he apologized. “I’m sorry for snapping. I’m just really over being sick. I want to go back to performing.”

She stood up and gently kissed his lips. “I know you do.”

Just then, Dr. Sprock entered the room with Rocky following.

“Hello Mr. Ratliff.” the doctor greeted, shaking his hand. “It’s nice to see that you’re awake and looking well after last night.”

“Yeah, I’m good.” he replied quickly.

“Good. Any headaches, weakness, trouble breathing, anything like that?”

“I feel a little weak but it’s nothing that I can’t handle.”

“Alright, well let me have a listen to your chest real quick and then we’ll see about getting your discharge papers.”

“Okay. Thank you.” he said.

Cheryl and Stormie knocked on the door before walking in.

“Sorry.” they apologized quickly.

“It’s perfectly fine, I was actually just getting ready to explain what needs to happen over the next few days.”

They all listened intently.
