Chapter One

Susan's POV

Our five-day vacation had been nothing short of incredible. Sun-kissed beaches, luxurious spa days, and shopping sprees that left my suitcase barely able to zip—it was the kind of break I had been craving. But if you ask Adrian, he'd say the best part wasn't the island breeze or the ocean view. No, it was something—or rather, someone—else entirely.

Sia Rudey.

Of all the places in the world, she had to be here? Seriously? The moment Adrian spotted her, his face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning. And just my luck—she was still the same flirty, overly perfect Sia from high school, the girl who always had a way of making me feel like I didn't belong. The moment Adrian introduced me, she plastered on a sugary-sweet smile, but when he wasn't looking, she shot me a glare so sharp it could cut glass.

"Oh my God, Adrian, your girlfriend is gorgeous," she cooed, the words dripping with fake enthusiasm.

I wasn't buying it. And as much as I hated to admit it, she wasn't exactly thrilled to see me either. Her eyes flickered over my outfit, lingering on my new floral dress, and I could swear I saw a hint of annoyance in her expression. Was she...insecure?

"I know, right?" Adrian said proudly, pulling me closer. "Suzi's amazing."

I almost melted at his words, but Sia's stiff smile didn't go unnoticed.

"So, Susan..." she said, her voice a little too sweet. "What do you do? I mean, besides looking flawless in every outfit."

I smirked. "Oh, just living my best life. Traveling, enjoying time with Adrian, and, you know, making unforgettable memories."

Sia's smile twitched. "That's nice. I guess some of us are lucky enough to just...float through life."

Adrian, oblivious to the silent battle happening between us, chuckled. "Susan works hard too, don't let her fool you."

"I'm sure she does," Sia murmured, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

Then, as if she suddenly remembered her original mission, she turned back to Adrian, resting her hand on his arm for just a second too long. "We should totally stay in touch. Like old times."

Like hell, you will, I thought, my jaw tightening. But I didn't say anything. Adrian wouldn't contact her. He knew how I felt about her—he always had. Right?

Now, here we were, stretched out on the beach under a golden sunset, the waves humming a soft lullaby. Adrian had his sunglasses on, lying back in his shorts, looking up at the sky—or maybe lost in his own thoughts. I, on the other hand, was busy brooding.

"You don't have to worry about Sia," Adrian said suddenly, his voice smooth but firm. "I love you, okay? Don't let her get in your head, baby."

I blinked, startled. "How did you know I was thinking about her?"

He turned his head, lowering his sunglasses just enough to meet my eyes. "I know you better than you know yourself, Suzi."

His gaze was steady, reassuring, and for a moment, my jealousy melted away.

"I was happy to see her, yeah," he admitted. "But that doesn't change anything between us. You mean the world to me."

A slow, knowing smile crept across my lips. "I love you, Adrian."

His smirk softened, and before I could say another word, he leaned in, brushing his lips against mine. The kiss was slow and unhurried, a silent promise between us.

When he pulled back, a teasing glint flickered in his eyes. "Let's head back to the hotel. We've got a flight tomorrow."

But as much as I loved our life back home, a part of me wanted to stay here forever—just him and me, away from the rest of the world.

After a while, wrapped up in each other in our hotel room, exhaustion finally won, and I drifted into sleep. At least, I thought I had.

"Baby, wake up. Aren't you hungry?"

I groaned, burying my face deeper into the pillow. "I want to sleep."

Adrian sighed dramatically. "Come on, just eat a little. Then I promise I'll let you sleep."

Like that ever happened. I peeked at him from under the sheets, only for him to chuckle. "Seriously? Covering up now? I've already seen everything."

I swatted at his arm, making him laugh harder. "Shut up. Now, give me my food so I can sleep and dream about my crush."

His playful grin vanished. "Sure, Suzi. But the food's on the beach, so you can go have it alone. Or, you know, with your so-called crush."

I smirked. "What, jealous?"

He rolled his eyes. "I swear, if you so much as describe him—"

I had tortured him with fictional crushes back in college, just to see his reactions. But once he caught on that they were all made up, he flipped the game on me. And, damn, he was good at it.

I sat up, stretching. "Fine, I'll get dressed. Should I go casual, or is this a fancy dinner situation?"

Adrian smirked. "You could show up in pajamas, and you'd still look gorgeous. But, knowing you, you'll wear a dress."

He wasn't wrong.

After a quick shower, I slipped into a floral dress from Lipsy London, paired it with silver sandals, and finished the look with gold earrings and a diamond bracelet. When I walked out, Adrian was on the phone, frowning at whatever conversation he was having.

"Who works on vacation?" I muttered, wrapping my arms around him from behind.

He ended the call, turning to face me with a small smile. "Ready?"

I nodded, and as we stepped outside, I realized he had led me to the beach. But not just anywhere—the entire setup was breathtaking. A private candlelit dinner with soft fairy lights, the ocean breeze carrying the soft notes of a violin melody. My heart swelled.

"This is... this is amazing, Adrian."

He pulled out my chair for me. "Anything for you."

As I sat down, I had a fleeting thought—was he planning to propose? The setting was perfect. But as much as I loved him, I wasn't ready for that. Not yet. Not with all the family issues lingering between us.

Still, as we laughed over spaghetti and milkshakes, reminiscing about our high school days, I knew one thing for sure—this was the perfect ending to our vacation.

And maybe, just maybe, a new beginning.
