The water has always called to me, ever since I was little. Not like I could hear voices or anything, I just felt that if I was without it, I'd die. Ironic, seeing as my family is a long line of runners, but my own attribute is swimming. And besides, I'm human, not a fish.

"Oi, lookie there. It's the Kappa."
"No water here, Kappa, whatcha going to do?"

I........ really hate that name. Kappa. An ayakashi or yokai that carries water in its head. Supposedly they die if they lose that water. It's not just me. They say my parents lost their own water, and that's why they died. Fools. How does a landslide relate to water? That's just dumb.

"Hey, Munto... What are you thinking about?"

Satoshi. My only friend. He has light pink hair and red eyes. His eyebrows are funny, like a kitsune's. A yokai fox. They call him Chibi, because he's really small and somewhat childish.

"It's hot today..."

He giggles. It sounds like bells. He's had a lot of girls ask him out. Even a few guys. But he always declines politely. He claims he's waiting for the right person. I only hope that it isn't me. I may be tall, but I'm submissive. And so is he. It wouldn't work.

"Say, Munto, what school did you pick?"

Oh, that's right. Today's our last official day of middle school. Our graduation is later this afternoon. And then we'll be high schoolers. I think he might be nervous.

"Iwatobi."

"Eh? But isn't Samezuka closer?"

I pause. I don't know why, but that place has always frightened me. Satoshi's older brother goes there, and is on the soccer team. They were having a game one time, and I was invited. In the end, I fainted right in the middle of the game, and Satoshi had to sit with me outside the school. His brother doesn't like me very much now.

"You know why."

"Oh... That's true. Maybe that place has a really creepy pervert, and your sixth sense is screaming for you to stay away!!"

"....... You're weird, Satoshi."

He's laughing again, and skipping beside me. My stride is twice his, after all. I already know he's going to Iwatobi. It's a very short walk from his house, and his parents are really overprotective.

The graduation ceremony went slowly. My grandparents didn't come, but Satoshi's mother did. Apparently his brother was at a friend's house or something. I didn't mind. I didn't really like the idea of Pops leaving the house on his own. Granny was bed-ridden, and she couldn't leave the house. I sometimes wish they didn't have such a strange grandchild like me. They deserve much better than to have to constantly worry. You see, my addiction to water had gotten me in some bad situations. I fell into the deep end of a pool before I learned how to swim, choked on water once after seeing if I could submerge my head in the bath, and once even sitting outside in the rain for hours.

I constantly needed to be watched.

"Say, Rei, how should we advertise for freshmen this year??"

"I don't know. Put up posters I guess."

A short blondie and taller guy with purplish-blue hair and red glasses. I can't tell just by looking at them that they're swimmers, due to the muscle builds. And also because they're in a sports store looking at swimsuits. Now I just feel awkward, standing here flipping through a catalog in my middle school swim team jacket...

"Oooooh! Rei, Rei, look!"

"What is it Nagisa? Eh? What's wrong? He's just standing there..."

"Look harder! That jacket! And graduation ribbon hanging out of his bag!"

"Let's see... Rakuzai Middle... Swim Team?!"

Oh. I guess they noticed me, seeing as they're heading over now. I suppose I should at least let them know I've acknowledged their presence. I close the catalog, but keep my place with a finger between the pages, and turn to face them. I know what they see. Dark chocolate brown hair almost to the point of looking black, eyes a blue so mixed with white they looked cloudy, a sky just before it snows.
Long arms, long legs, fair face. When I'm not slouching, I stand at 183 cm, or about 6'0".

"Hello! I'm Hazuki Nagisa, and this is Rugazaki Rei! We're in the Iwatobi High Swim Team, and we noticed your swim jacket!"

I blinked at them, then shuffled a bit. I can't help being shy around people, it's just a natural reflex. Ah, thank goodness, Satoshi to the rescue. Huh, I forgot he has a habit of hiding behind me.

"Ooh, did you need something from Munto? Sorry if he doesn't talk much, he's really shy! I'm Kawa Satoshi, and this giant is my friend Tawamuri Munto!"

Rei pushed up his glasses.
"Munto? That doesn't sound Japanese..."

Satoshi giggles and hugged me.
"Munto's half Egyptian! That's why he's so tan!"

Nagisa did some sort of little happy dance. He's so similar to Satoshi... who had climbed up me and was sitting on my shoulders. I swear he's part monkey.

"Say, you guys just graduated, right? What school are you going to?"

"Iwatobi High! Don't worry! We'll be joining the team! Besides, Munto would die of dehydration if we didn't. Which reminds me..." I felt his weight shift, so I'm guess he's looking down at me now. " the pool awaits us, Munto! Run, my noble steed!"

So I set him down. He looked up at me, then began whining, playfully clinging to my leg. "Nooooooo, carry meeeeeee!"  And then he gave me puppy eyes.

Must... resist.... Just kidding. They don't work on me.

"Excuse me, but why don't you just carry him? He can't possibly weigh that much, considering he's much smaller than you."

I didn't look Rei in the eye, but I did manage an answer.

"I'm not a steed. I'm just.... me."

And without further ado, I promptly picked Satoshi up, tucking him under one arm. He said goodbye as I hightailed it out of there. At least I kept the catalog so I can just order things online. I usually get the same style anyways.

"Hurry, Munto, so we can have a snack before we swim!"

Ooh, a snack?!
