A TALE OF FIVE FINGERS
THE SOUTHERN FINGER
14TH DECEMBER 2014
Dilated pupils, slightly ajar lips, ruffled hair and wrinkled clothes.
She was late once again.
The extraordinarily loud beeping of her alarm informed her that she was basically an hour late. You see, Darcy programmed her alarm clock to get louder by the minute so as to wake her up when she doesn't expect it.
She jumped up from her bed and ran straight into her bathroom, jumping into the shower. A loud squeal escaped her lips when the cold water touched her skin. Darcy jumped out of the shower and looked up at her heater, It was switched off from the socket.
She held her breath and jumped into the shower once again, switching on the shower head and continued to scream as it cascaded down her body. After she feverishly scrubbed her body and rinsed off, she grabbed her towel and shivered through her short walk toward her heater.
She'd be damned if she got a cold.
Soon after, she was dressed in jet black high waist jeans and a white long sleeved shirt with the word 'Danny's' printed across her chest. As you probably guessed, it was her work outfit.
Darcy pulled on a jacket and ran out of her small apartment.
"Taxi!" She yelled making the yellow coloured vehicle pull over by the side of the street. She yanked the door open and smiled at the middle aged man. "Danny's bar." She said loudly.
He nodded and started the car once again.
A loud huff escaped her lips before she flopped back against the leather seats of the taxi. This was the third time she was late this week. The first time, she forgot to set her alarm clock, The second time, she felt awfully sick and now, she had a pretty late night to knock her out.
The taxi slowed down in front of the very homely looking bar and nodded at her. "Have a good day ma'am."
"Thank you." She said handing him a few dollars and hopping out of his car.
The loud sound of her boss; Danny made her stop in her tracks and round the building, toward the back door. "Where's Darcy? I swear she's Gonna get a real hankering when I see her."
She winced and pulled open the back door only to run into hank, the bartender. "Hank! I Need your help."
Hank was a tall and lanky dirty blonde haired man. He was basically her best friend here in Alabama. He grinned at her and dropped the crate of beer he was holding onto the counter before folding his arms across his chest and raising a brow. "To hide from Danny? Or to help with that rats nest you call your hair?" He jokingly asked, his thick accent dripping from his words.
Darcy rolled her eyes as she tied her short apron around her waist. "No, I don't know. Maybe you could come up with a cover story for why he hasn't seen me earlier?" She asked, her blue eyes shining in desperation.
Hank shrugged and looked behind him; at the quiet cook, working his magic on the stove before speaking. "Dontcha worry darlin' I'll take care of it." He said, taking the crate in his hands and walking out of the multi-purpose kitchen.
Darcy sighed in relief and smiled at the cook. "Good thing you're here, everybody's been going crazy ya know? The hoedown's about to start and the restaurant is crowded with tourists." He said, taking out a bunch of French fries from the deep fryer.
"The hoedown? That's today?" She asked loudly.
"By golly, you really are out of it aren't ya?" He joked, shaking his head and handing her a tray containing two burgers and two beers. "Here, take this to table three." He added.
