Chapter 10 - Flattering Piece Of Sponge.
Having to spend an extra hour after school on a Friday sucks. Even the idea of being an extra hour away from home on a weekend made me annoyed. And thus, my grumpy self was shooting daggers to everyone in the hallways as I made my way to the cafeteria.
I kick the door to the cafeteria open and a group of girls turn to look at me as I roll my eyes and get in the line with a tray in my hand, desperate for some food.
Dylan sneaks up behind me and places his hands on my waist. He proceeds to say something along the lines of 'hey Princess', I guess, when I interject him.
"Don't even think about it."
The line moved ahead and so did I and in no time, I was making my way to where Olivia, Jenna, Rose and Justin were sitting, with Dylan hot on my heels. I took a seat next to Olivia with Jenna sitting on my left.
"I can't believe we have to spend an extra hour in school on a Friday. I wish I hadn't gone to that damned party." Rose says grumpily and puts her head between her hands on the table.
"I gotta call my mom and tell her I'll be late. We had plans to go shopping after school." I tell her and grab my phone off of the table from where I placed it when I had arrived.
I leave the cafeteria and sit by the lockers in a quiet corner of the hallway and dial my mom's number. She picks up after three rings and I'm left wondering about how I am supposed to tell her that her daughter went to a party on a school night, drank a drink that was spiked and skipped school the next day.
"Honey? Are you there?" Mom says and I immediately snap out of my thoughts,
"Yeah mom, I actually wanted to tell you something really important. Tyler told me he'd talk to you about it but I guess he forgot." I say to her, worried about how this might turn out.
"Sure. But could you rush it? I'm at work and I have a really important meeting with the finance team." She says in a single breath and I faintly hear the sound of heels clicking on the floor in the background.
"Here goes nothing, well, you see, I, um... I kind of went to a party this Monday and someone spiked my drink and I skipped school on Tuesday and I have detention after school today so I guess I'll see you at dinner tonight since you don't need to leave work early anymore for our shopping spree?" I say all this so fast that I actually lose my breath for a second and it all comes out as a question rather than a confession.
"I'll see you tonight young lady. You have a lot to explain but this meeting is really important to me. Your dad had texted me that he received a call from your math teacher but I guess we'll talk about it all tonight, at dinner." She says in a stern and dead panned voice and hangs up.
I groan and shove my phone into the front pocket of my jeans. I get up and make my way back to the cafeteria. Guess eating away my fear of what will happen tonight in the Montgomery household is as close as I can get to being 'fine.' Joy.
"What'd she say?" Jenna asks me as I sit down next to her at the table.
"She had a meeting and was busy so I guess I'll face her wrath at dinner tonight." I tell her and bang my head repeatedly on the table. The next thing I know, I'm hitting my head on a soft palm and not on the hard table. I turn my head up to lock eyes with Dylan; his hand lay flatly on the table where I was just hitting my head like a maniac. I give him a small smile and gently remove his hand from the table. He passes me my tray of food from earlier and smiles softly. It's weird watching SpongeBob smile instead of his signature smirk. But I like his smile.
Thinking why Dylan decided to sit with us today and not with his usual group of guys, I take a bite from my burger and look up towards Rose when I catch Justin glaring at Dylan. Dylan forces his eyes away from Justin and focuses them on his tray of food while Justin quietly shakes his head. He catches me staring at him and gets up and kisses Rose on her forehead and leaves while I'm left wondering what the hell happened.
The rest of the day passes by in a blur. The final bell rings, indicating the end of the day. While everyone else rushes to put their books back in their lockers and grab their backpacks to go home, I am crawling, literally, with my copy of To Kill A Mockingbird, looking for my best friends. Yay, detention.
I spot Olivia's blonde hair from down the hall and make my way towards her.
"Let's hum to Rachen Platten's Stand By You to get through this dreadful hour and just get this over with." She says and locks her arm with mine. We make our way down the hall and I see Coach Corton standing by the doors of the library. She raises her eyebrows at me and Liv, as if asking how we landed in trouble. I shift my gaze towards the floor and pull Liv by her hand, hurriedly entering the library.
We sit at a table and slowly Rose, Jenna, Dylan, Natalie, Ella, Lillian and a few of the guys from the soccer time get settled on the tables as well while Coach Corton sits on her chair behind the desk.
"Neither one of you is happy to be here; I know that just by looking at your pretty faces. Although shocked to see some of you here in detention, you boys and girls are the reason that even I have to stay an extra hour here on a Friday and trust me, I'm not too happy about it either . So just restrain from speaking so that we can all leave as soon as possible otherwise I'll be forced to give your names for cafeteria service for the upcoming week." Coach says and pulls out a magazine from her purse.
I open my book and begin reading just as Olivia slips a piece of paper on my lap. I look questioningly at her and she points her thumb towards the table right in the back,by the bookshelves where Dylan, Justin and Noah are sitting. Dylan winks at me and turns his head back towards Justin, who refuses to meet his eyes. Justin looks up at Rose, who is sitting right across from me at the same table with me, Liv and Jenna. His eyes land on me but he doesn't say anything. Instead, he pulls his phone and earphones out and plugs them into his phone and uses music to drown everything out.
I unfold the piece of paper and unwillingly, a small smile breaks out on my face.
You're my very own Scout Finch, minus all the fist action but I won't have you any other way.
-SpongeBob.
Shocked that Dylan knows about Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird and that he has even read the book, I look up towards Dylan and he throws another piece of paper towards me and I manage to catch it, safe from Coach Corton's eyes. Inside are the words that I've been refusing to acknowledge since this morning.
Tonight at eight, Princess. Don't forget to wear something comfortable and don't even think about using Tyler's name to threaten me because I'm not gonna back out.
Damn that flattering piece of sponge.
