I woke up the next morning groggy and sore. I had barely gotten any sleep thanks to a particular thief that kept invading my dreams. I thought about staying home all day but soon remembered that I had to go by the precinct and give my statement about the previous night's events. Groaning in dread, I rolled out of bed and tiredly went through my morning routine. I made coffee, took a quick shower, and checked my emails. Finally, after grabbing a light breakfast consisting of a muffin and a slightly scorched piece of toast, I left my apartment and began the short walk to the Caidia City Police Department.
After giving my statement, I decided to go to The Grind, a popular coffee shop just a block away from the station. It was also where my two best friends, Angel Garcia and Cora Patton, worked. When I walked into the coffee shop, I was greeted by the pleasant aroma of vanilla and freshly ground coffee beans. I approached the counter where Angel was working at the cash register. His brown eyes widened when he saw me and he literally jumped over counter to wrap me into a bone-crushing hug. "Oh, thank God!"
"Angel, not that I'm not happy to see you and all, but can you please let me go before I pass out?" I wheezed, the air having been squeezed out of my lungs. He mumbled an apology and stepped back. His eyes traveled over my body, as if searching for an injury.
"Cora told me what happened last night! Are you okay?" he frantically asked, holding my shoulders firmly. I frowned in confusion.
"I'm fine. How'd Cora find out?" I looked over his shoulder to search for our friend. Angel waved me off.
"You know how Cora is. She always digging up info." he shrugged before asking once again, "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine." I assured him with a weak smile.
"Oh my God, Elliot!" the breath was knocked out of me as a frighteningly strong pair of arm wrapped around me from behind, sending me stumbling forward. "Are you okay?"
"Well, I was until you two physically assaulted me." I grumbled, prying Cora's lanky arms off of me. The said blonde menace stomped over to stand in front of me, her arms crossed and her blue eyes narrowed into a halfhearted glare. "And I swear to God, if one more person asks me of I'm okay, I'm gonna scream."
"You were attacked by a criminal, Elliot, I'm allowed to be worried about you." she told me. I took her by the elbow and led her to a more private area of the coffee shop. Angel followed close behind us.
"About that, how do you know about last night?" I asked her. "Who told you?"
"No one told me." she insisted.
"CCPD kept my name out of the press so somebody had to have told you." I asked again. "Who was it?"
"If you must know, I hacked into the CCPD database last night and read the report." she touted, crossing her arms. I raised a questioning eyebrow.
"Really? You hacked into the CCPD database? Cora, you can barely work your own Facebook page. You honestly expect me to believe that you hacked into the most secure network in the city?" I scoffed, looking over briefly to Angel. He rolled his eyes and shook his head, obviously not buying it either.
"I'll have you know that I've been taking night classes in computer coding. I am now a master hacker and an expert in lesbianage." she told us dramatically with a proud smirk. Angel snickered behind his hand.
"I pretty sure you mean espionage." he chuckled. She shook her head.
"I'm pretty sure I don't." she disagreed.
"Don't try to change the subject." I interrupted, drawing her attention back to me. "Who told you about last night?"
