Frost responded to our message within minutes of us sending it out. He said that he was sending a representative over in his place because he was busy with other things, hint hint, my sister. I couldn't help but have a cheeky smile to myself when I heard that. Once again, they had underestimated how much trouble Tess could be.
We arranged to met the representative in the middle of the valley, an equal distance away from both camps. The Commander had secretly sent out the troops to hide in the hills either side of the government's camp so when the shield came down, they could attack straight away. I had contacted Tess using telepathy so she knew the plan. All we had to do now was stall the representative and wait.
The pain killer power that Emily had was starting to wear off now and the aching feeling had come back. It was painful but I fought it off. There were people a lot worse than me in the hospitals...
I stood, now, in the valley with the Commander and Nick slightly in front of me. In the distance, we could see three figures coming towards us. As they got closer, I could see who they were. Two guards and Dr Brand. I took a deep breath and gritted my teeth. I was not going to look weak in front of him. They stopped two metres away from us. Dr Brand had a slightly amused expression plastered all over his ugly face as he looked at us in turn before his gaze finally settled on me. He grinned, showing off his yellowed teeth. "I'm so glad you could be here, dear Edward," he said softly. Nick took a step back and laid a hand on my shoulder.
"Your business is with Commander Palmer," he growled. "I suggest that you leave Edward out of this."
"But isn't he what this is all about?" Dr Brand said with mock sweetness. I clenched my jaw and squeezed my eyes shut. Don't let him in. Don't let him in.
"Actually, no," the Commander said, drawing Dr Brand's attention away from me. "I have summoned you to discuss the terms of your surrender."
"Ha," Dr Brand laughed. "Well, I think you know that that won't happen. If that is it then you are wasting my time."
"No, I am not wasting your time," the Commander said. "I'm giving you a chance to surrender yourself. I am fully aware that you do not have the authority or position to surrender the government as a whole but yourself, that is a different story."
"But you specifically asked for Mr Frost," Dr Brand said. He looked slightly flustered but tried not to show it.
"Oh, I knew my brother would not have come," the Commander said, smiling. This was news to me. I glanced over and Nick who did not look surprised. Of course she didn't expect him to come, especially if Tess was running around his camp.
"Hmm," Dr Brand said thoughtfully. "I did not expect this." He went into his scruffy lab coat and pulled out a small device that I instantly recognised. It was the thing that Mr Bradford had used to torture that time in front of Frost. The black liquid that filled my veins and that Dr Brand used to control my dreams. "Nick, that's it," I whispered to him. One look and he knew what I was talking about.
"I really didn't want to do this but you leave me no choice," Dr Brand said. He pushed the lever forward, causing me to collapse to the floor in pain. I held up a shaking hand to my face to see the veins bulging and black. Nick had charged forward and tackled Dr Brand. The device went flying out of his hand and landed in a patch of grass a few metres away from me. The pain stopped and I struggled to my feet, gasping.
Nick was flying around Dr Brand, keeping him away from the device. The Commander was handling one of Dr Brand's guards but the other one was running towards Nick with a gun in his hand. He raised it, about to shoot. I raised my right hand and pushed it towards him, closing my fist. A golden shield surrounded him. He smashed his fists against the wall but I held strong and gave him a cheeky smile.
Nick and the Commander had knocked out the other guard and Dr Brand. Nick turned to me and patted me on the back. "Thank you for saving my life, Ed," he said. I nodded. Nick picked up the device and snapped it in half, beyond fixing. "I think you've had enough of that," he growled as he ground the pieces underneath his foot. I felt a change in me, like taking off handcuffs after years of wearing them...freedom. I unclenched my fist to release the guard. It was the first time I had ever used my powers when I wanted to. It surprised me how much control I had over them. I'm not going to lie, it felt good.
Nick stalked over to the guard and pick him up by the collar. "You will never win," the guard shouted. "You can't get through our shield." Suddenly there was a massive booming sound coming from the government's camp. The golden dome flickered and then was gone. Just like that. Nick looked back at the guard. "Are you sure about that?" He asked him.

Nick, the Commander and I drove towards the government's base in a four by four truck that picked us up a few minutes after the shield blew out. The Commander had armed herself with two guns while Nick and I only had one each but we had our powers so that was fine. The truck stropped at the outskirts of the camp and we jumped out into the battle that had already begun. The Changed had marched into the camp and were now fighting the government's men with ferocity. The Commander sprinted off as soon as she touched the floor to lead the troops. "Let's go and find Tess and Caleb," Nick shouted at me over the sound of gunfire. We fought our way through the battle. Government men were falling left, right and centre to the Changed's powers. Nick and I worked as a team, shooting and flying to people's rescue. I used my shield to reflect bullets from hitting people while I shot any government man that got in my way. I surprised myself a bit. I didn't like killing people at all. Some of these men I'm sure didn't agree with the government's plan but I doubt I killed any of them with my aim. Maybe just hurt them. Everything was a blur to me. I hardly remember anything until we reached the centre of the base.
Tess, Caleb and Cain were fighting side by side. Caleb was blinding people with bright white light for Tess to blast with fire balls. She looked so strong and grown up as she fought. She and Caleb worked so well together they were almost the same person. Nick and I pushed out way through to get to them. Soon the crowds thinned. Government men put down their weapons and surrendered to us as the Changed took them away. Nick and I were a few metres away now from Tess and Caleb. She saw me and started waving, smiling with such warmth and happiness that it made my heart sing. That wasn't a smile I had seen in a while. I raised my hand to wave and smile back but I stopped in mid-air. Behind Tess, a figure came out from the cover of the great machine. He stood and lunged towards her. In his hand he held a gleaming knife.
The man was Frost.
