Soul Evans lived for few things. He lived for the simple things.
He lived for things like; the way stars sparkle when you cry, or the way your home smells like home, or the way your friends laugh whole heartedly like they used to when they were young, or the way Maka looks when she's making a lovely smelling meal. But most of all, Souls absolute favorite simple thing that he lived for;

Was her blush.

Maka blushed a lot, Like when she gets called on in class she'd flush a deep shade of cherry red, or when he'd tease her for leaving the door open while going to the little girls room, she'd shout and call him a pervert while turning a rose like shade.

But none of those are the blushes he lives and loves for. The blushes he lives for; he likes to call her stardust. Because these type of blushes are quite rare. They'd happen precisely at the perfect times though.

Like when he first kissed her, he had pulled away nervously after landing a gentle peck on her virgin lips. After he'd tainted her, he opened his eyes to      see her deep emerald eyes staring into his rubies. Her cheeks and nose was dusted gently with the most perfect, pink red shade that looked like it had been sprinkled there by an angel. Her lips were parted slightly, not open though, almost as if to be in awe.
And that's when he dared to mutter the soft words "I love you Maka".
To which she took his shaking hands in hers, and returned them "I love you too Soul" we were 15 then.

Or when he had made love to her the first time, we had been dripping with sweat but as she collapsed into her arms shaking with love, she had nearly cried with overwhelming feelings of passion, he'd seen it then too, as he looked down at her little face in his arms, their bodies against each other her breathing was steadying but still rapid, and she looked nearly still in ecstasy with her lips parted and her eyes closed. She opened them, and with a glance into her eyes the stardust appeared, layered gently over her cheeks.
"Wow" She had said breathlessly.
"I love you too, Maks" I laughed hugging her to my body tighter. We were 18 then.

Or maybe when I asked her to marry me, I had grabbed the velvet box and held it out to her bashfully, my eyes not daring to meet hers. Cause it wasn't cool if she said no, I didn't want to cry.
"Maka would you maybe marry me?" I had asked. After a momentous silence I had to look up, expecting to be heartbroken I found one of my favorite things. Again, her cheeks had been powdered gently with the stardust that was soon overrun with tears of joy as she nearly cried the word "yes". I hugged her so tightly in my arms. We were 22 then.

Or possibly when she told me I was going to be a dad, she hadn't looked me in the eyes the entire morning and stuttered like she was Crona when ever I asked her what was wrong. Finally she had confronted me, stardust slowly lathered on her delicate skin the more she spoke.
"Soul. . . Um I was late and I checked and your gonna be a dad." She spewed out softly, fear dripping from her voice and tears threatening to ruin the stardust that had by now been dumped across her cheeks like powder. I had nearly cried. I had hugged her so tightly
"Maka I'm so happy, why didn't you tell me, oh my gosh" I exclaimed happier than I'd ever been.
"I was scared you'd leave me." She pouted a little, looking down.
"Maka never ever think I'll leave you okay? I love you. And this little baby as well, and I'll always take care of both of you." I promised, a promise I would keep for a long time. We were 24 then.

Or probably when she gave birth to my only child, it wasn't a difficult birth but I guess I wasn't the one shoving a baby out of me. But it was fast, easy, and perfect in other words.
When Daisy was laid in my arms, I had brought her gently over to Maka after I convinced myself I wouldn't cry. She had blonde little tufts and her eyes were an icy blue thanks to Spirit. And the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Now Maka, had not promised herself she wouldn't cry. The stardust that sprinkled thinly on her cheeks and nose was sprinkled gently on our daughters as well. And Maka let a little tear fall as she looked at our daughter.
If you ever tell anyone I'll deny everything, but I did start crying. Sobbing if I remember it correctly. We were 25 then.

Soul Evans savored every pinkish red speck stardust that dusted, blew, lathered, dumped, or sprinkled onto his friends, girlfriends, lovers, wives, and daughters cheek. So he could remember every moment with them by the blushes that he kept in check.

He was saving them for the day long after all of this. After he teased Maka about her greying hair, although he always thought it was a gorgeous silvery white, and after Maka teased him for the wrinkles that appeared after years. After the day the doctor said Maka would have to stay in the hospital for a little bit, and a little bit turned into longer, and longer, and permanently. After the day Daisy got her first boyfriend, a boy too cool for his own good, we all knew who that sounded like.
After the day Daisy married him and had two kids that called them Nana and Papa.

After the day Maka had passed away. It was so beautiful too, the day was a perfect split between fall and summer. The hospital room was so filled with tons of Maka's books and her personal belongings that Soul barely ever found any of it at home anymore.
"Maka I always loved your grey hair by the way" he stammered like a 13 year old.
"Thanks-" she said laughing a little before coughing a moment. She only smiled through the pain.
"I'll miss you Maka, please don't leave me here" he had said nervously like she'd leave without answering him.
"I'm so sorry, you know I don't want too" she rasped quietly.
"Maybe if I give you blood of my lungs or-"
"Baka." She muttered "I love you Soul Eater Evans" she said.

That's when he had seen her stardust for the last time. It had blew gently across her cheeks and nose as she smiled softly with effort, looking up at him with those ageless emerald eyes, silver hair curled at her shoulders and the beeping machine notified them that her heart was slowing. His breathing grew rapid and scared and his eyes wide with worry.

"I love you too Maka Evans"

And she smiled so happily with tears threatening to flood her gorgeous eyes.

And her soft stardust blew gently off her cheeks, scattering into the sky.

Into the stars, where it belongs.
