Chapter Five

They both took one day off to celebrate but Chloe insisted on getting back to work the day after.

Clark was surprised at how well she seemed to be handling her ordeal. If anything, he was having a harder time of this than she was. He had carefully repressed the memories, but he vividly remembered the haunted look in his Chloe's eyes when Lex revealed that he had raped her. He couldn't believe that it had happened to both Chloes.

It became clear to him them that Chloe needed more protection that he could offer. She needed to be invulnerable.

She had told him about when Kent's powers had been transferred to Eric Summers and partially to Lana Lang. If he could figure out a way to share his power with Chloe, there would be no stopping them. They would be the ultimate power couple.

It also hadn't escaped his notice that having his power had corrupted both Eric and Lana. He was certain that Chloe was a stronger character than both of them but maybe...

At the moment, Chloe was indifferent to his more lethal activities, she didn't want to know about them but she also didn't condemn him for them. As well as making her invulnerable his hope was that this extra nudge would push her over the edge into the darkness, with him.

He began working on the transference in a disused warehouse in Suicide Slums.

He started with mice, housed in a kryptonite cage. Luckily thanks to Lionel repeatedly exposing him to green kryptonite, he had build up a little tolerance to it.

He passed an electrical current through himself and the cage to the mouse, reasoning that if the mouse got sick afterwards, it had worked.

The first test was unsuccessful. The second, using a much higher voltage, enabled a complete transference so Clark had to reverse the process, passing the current through the mouse and it's cage first, then into him.

Now that he was sure it was possible, each subsequent test was to find the correct voltage to transfer some of his power without transferring it all.

When he found the correct voltage he tested his remaining strength to make sure he wouldn't weaken himself in the process and found that as soon as he stepped into the sunlight, his power increased back to normal levels. He could share his gift without needing to give up any of his strength.

He began testing larger animals like cats and small dogs. He found that as the subject size increased, the voltage used also had to increase. Finally he found a small Newfoundland dog which was a similar weight to Chloe and after successfully transferring part of his powers to the dog three times, he was ready to propose the idea to Chloe

"Chloe, relax. It'll be fine," Clark said, taking her into his arms.

"But what if-"

Clark cut her worried off with a kiss.

"I'll be there with you," he assured her. "Nothing will go wrong, I promise."

Chloe nodded and took a deep breath before pulling out of his embrace and checking her reflection one last time in the full length mirror. She smoothed the skirt of her long satin gown and self consciously smoothed her hair.

"You look beautiful," he said.

Chloe smiled.

"Okay, let's get this over with," she said, turning to him.

"Chloe," he loved her insecurities. "It's just a party, you know."

"Yeah, an engagement party with us as the guests of honour!" she busied herself straightening his bow tie, even though it didn't need it.
