I pulled at the chain on my left wrist. My leg was encased in a purple cast and there was gauze wrapping my right arm. "Hello," I paused, "I need to know whats going on. Someone please tell me whats going on!"
A nurse entered the room. "My name is Loretta, and I'm your nurse for today. Don't worry sweet heart, the chains are only temporary until we get a cop to come get them off. We found your momma drivin' drunk and put the rest of the pieces together."
Loretta was kind and round. It had been so long since an adult had actually been nice to me. "So, what exactly happened?" I asked her, praying that she would continue being nice to me.
She explained that my mom reported me as a runaway shortly after she hit me, and told the cops that I had stolen things from her. That's why I was chained to the bed. Then, once they found her driving drunk with all the stolen goods, they realized it was a lie. The police hadn't come to unlock me yet.
'What will happen to me? Will I be taken to foster car-' My thoughts were interrupted by Loretta explaining that she was going to foster as soon as I got out of the hospital.
I didn't want a foster home. I wanted to be on my own without fear that my mother would come after me. I wanted to be somewhere safe, where I trusted the people around me. I didn't know this woman, and she may be nice now, but nobody is ever the same behind closed doors.
