Deepika hears her phone ping with a new notification. Ensuring the teacher was facing away from her and towards the board, she takes an agile look at her iPhone. A friend request on face*book from Karishma Sharma? She clicks accept, inquisitive why Karishma would send her, Deep, a friend request. She then sees Karishma is online, and gets a message from her. Just then, the teacher turns around and Deep abruptly drops her phone in her bag. The teacher lamentably calls on her, and she realizes she has no clue as to what is going on. "Oh no!" she grieves, and tries squinting at the board. No luck, since the board is as blank as her brain. Everyone's scrutinizing her. "Can you please repeat the question?" "Sure. So is it true?" "What?" "That's the last question I asked! Don't tell me you weren't paying attention!" Everyone starts laughing at her. "Quiet!" vociferates the teacher, and then, "After class, meet me in here for detention. You have next period work time, right? So spend that time here." She goes back to asking people questions, and Deep thinks, "Detention?" Mama will be so choleric and enraged. The bell clangs, and everybody starts packing up. She quickly picks up her items and walks to the front of the room. Her teacher motions for her to come over and then says, "I'm very disappointed in you Deep. May I ask what was so important that you thought it wasn't mandatory to pay attention in class?" "Um... I'm sorry. That will never happen again." That was all Deepika could muster. She had never felt so ashamed in her life, and she wanted the ground to open up and swallow her. "Since this has never happened before, I will let you slide with a warning today." "Oh, thank you so much! I promise you will get my undivided attention all the time from now on." She buoyantly walks out the door, and sees Upen waiting for her. All traces of happiness are sucked out of her. " Hi, I, um.... didn't really understand what happened in the cafeteria today. Care to explain?" "Nothing happened!" "Ok...." mumbles Upen dubiously. "See you later, bye!" yells Deep, almost halfway across the hallway. "Bye..." She just couldn't muster up the courage to face him right now. She wasn't even sure if he was even worth it? Was she even doing the right thing? Maybe she wasn't...
