Slowly coming out of sleep, I felt something fidget against me. Startled, I was almost fully awake and I looked up into the eyes of Devin, he was staring right back. After blinking a couple of times to get out of the haziness of first waking up, I realised we were leaning up against each other.
Two moments of awkward shock later we were both squirming away from each other. I took the pleasure out of seeing Devin blushing from the embarrassment, then I realised so was I. What is wrong with me? I just have to blush, didn't I? I then took in my surroundings, faster than Devin.
Looking down at my hands which were bound together by cuffs and looking around the cage I remembered what happened.
"Oh no," I muttered more to myself. "Shit, this is bad, this is really, really bad. Devin, what are we going to do!?" I half yelled, half whispered to Devin. He looked as shocked as I felt. Devin and I stole one glance at each other and fully understood what had happened. The Zmeya had beaten us and had locked us up.
Gripping the cold iron bars in as much as I could, I screamed over and over again for them to let us out. Though after five minutes, or what felt like five minutes with no response, Devin grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
"They won't listen to us, but we'll get out of this, I promise."
Somehow, Devin saying this, reassured me. Stubbornly, I snatched my arm out of his grip and kicked the cage. I tried to not show the pain coming out of the contact of the kick. Groaning very loudly, and very immaturely I then sighed. "Well what do you think we should do Mr. Calm-one?" Sarcasm was my best defence here.
"We wait." He said ever-so-calmly.
"We...wait? Are you asking me to be patient?" I groaned.
"Yes." The calmness of his tone was starting to bug me now.
"That's no fun but okay....though what exactly are we waiting for? It's not like the others can help us, they've either been captured too or have no clue where we are." I responded.
"You're right, but we have to wait until the right moment comes upon us, we'll know it when it's here."
Five minutes had passed us. "You know, I really am hating this whole 'let's-approach-this-calmly-and-be-patient' thing more and more." I sighed, which in return he groaned.
"Do you trust me?" Devin asked me in full seriousness. Did I trust him? He took a step closer so he was hovering over me. "Yes, I trust you." I replied truthfully, well I hoped.
"Good. Trust me when I say this, we need to be patient." After the tension of his last sentence I began to feel uncomfortable and awkward. Unlocking our eyes, I looked down and rubbed my wrist while taking a step back. I then sat down and leaned up against the cold iron bars putting my head in my hands, curling my knees up.
"If we, as king and queen, can't defeat the Zmeya together, then who can?" I sighed to myself. Devin was silent, just simply sitting down on the concrete floor. It wasn’t until the silence became overwhelming did I snap my neck towards him. “Devin…when we were out there, you mentioned something about the bond. What…what did you mean? We haven’t even bonded yet.”
“Can’t you feel it?”
“Feel what?”
Devin sighed, almost sounding frustrated and disappointed. “Well, that answers the question then.”
I frowned, and began pacing nervously, like a tiger in a cage. “Devin, I don’t understand what the hell is happening, okay? I’m stuck in some cage, God-knows-where, and Marcus and Galen don’t know where we are. And do they even have Alisanne? What am I even supposed to do?”
