Prison Escape

PENNY

I woke up with a start,my eyes were wide open but I couldn't see anything. I was surrounded by darkness and horrifying  silence . I tried to move my hands and legs but for some reason their movements were restricted .My memory was coming back to me in sections and mind started to clear up . My panic and anxiety levels shot up. I started hyperventilating and i felt as if my heart will explode any minute.
My entire body ached with spasms and my muscles had gone so sore that I could barely move them.That's when realisation hit me about where I was right now. I concentrate on calming myself down and slowing my breathing. As I lay in the darkness thinking about how I ended up here.

A beautiful widow,Penny moved to the small town,Dometrix. Penny had just completed her nursing degree and joined the local hospital.
Alex met with an accident and he was taken to the same hospital. Penny nursed him back to health . Alex had been smittened by the innocent looking and caring Penny. He used all methods known to him to woo her, flowers, expensive gifts, compliments ,trips to theatres and candle light dinner at exotic restaurants . He finally won her heart and within a month they were infront of the priest promising to love each other. After 6 months Penny was widow again.It has been a perfect plan. Daily administrating a slow poison in Alex's soup to resemble a wasting disease. No one suspected Penny. Not her in-laws,Not her neighbours,Not ever her late husband suspected. She had played the role of a loving caring wife perfectly who nursed by her ailing husband till his death bed. She would have got away with all the hard earned money if police has not acted on a anonymous tip they got from a caller about Penny being involved in death of her husband.

They reopened the case, before questioning Penny they started collecting evidence against her. After checking Alex's bank accounts records that found out all the money had been trasfered to unknown account in other state . Alex's body was exhumed and sent to laboratory for testing.

The toxicology tests determined the cause of Alex's death was acute intoxication with Fentanyl. It is an anti anxiety pill,over dose of same proved fatal. Penny was the only person responsible for the drug inventary logs in the hospital and after further investigation showed there were large amount of pills missing and no record for subscription of fentanyl pills was done by any doctors in past few months. Cctv footage of past few months revealed that Penny had been stealing the pills from the hospital.

Penny pleaded not gulity for the murder charges but the court had enough evidence to award her with life imprisonment.She was angry and resentful about getting caught. She had decided that she will not give up so soon.She began plotting ways to escape from jail.

During first month, she was assigned work at garbage disposal. She found that the garbage bags and garbage van were thoroughly checked before leaving the prison premises,thereby spoiling her garbage van escape plan. She checked the sewage system for loopholes but found nothing.Next month she started working in prison kitchen. She was sure She will find something like knives and other things in kitchen which she can use for her escape. She saw that the vegetables were chopped in a big chopping machines so again it was a dead end . One day while serving food during lunch hour, one old man collapsed while having his meal.He must be around 60 yrs old. They took him to prison hospital, he had died due to a heart ailment . If a prisoner dies in prison his family is informed and they handover the deadbody to them. But this person had no family ,so in such cases the prison staff takes care of the final ritual.The housekeeping staff prepares the deadbody for the burial and put it in the casket which are kept in room away from the prison cells. Whenever such  prisoner dies, a bell rang at the prison church which was heard by all the prison inmates so that they can pay their respects to that person. The prison docter fill the death certificate and then goes to room and nails the lid on the coffin. Finally the coffin is taken to the graveyard which is just outside the prison.
