River blinked awake, yawning. "Wake up, sleepyhead!" said an unfamiliar voice. She looked up to see a russet, pointed face above hers.

"Come on," the voice said again, gently. "It is time for dawnfeast."

What's that? She wondered. But she decided to go along and be accepting of everything around her.

So she padded after the russet creature, following her to a swept clearing in the middle of the den. Several other creatures that looked about the same were hunched over a half-eaten carcass of a deer.

The biggest one looked at the one she was following. "We are almost out of deer. One of us will need to go hunting later."

"Well, it is not going to be me, Russet Claw. I am raising kits!"

Russet Claw's eyes dropped to River. "Well, well, well. Look who is awake."

River bravely looked up. "Hello. Do you know why I'm here?"

Russet Claw chuckled. "She speaks strange. I can barely understand her. That will be fixed, with time."

One of the little ones, which she assumed were kits, piped up. "And she looks funny too."

"Not another word," the female fox growled. "Besides, funny is for laughter, hahaha, not strange. You meant she looks strange. But she does not, right, Dazzle and Scratch?" She glared at them.

"Yes, Mother Soft Heart," the kits replied, but not without eye rolling.

"Come on, River. Have a seat." Soft Heart sat at the large stone the deer was on.

River sat down next to the kits, and some meat was pushed towards her. She stared at it. I've never had meat before. She suddenly realized she had remembered something. She scanned her mind, but it was as blank as ever. Oh well. She dug into the bits she was given. It was surprisingly good!

"Are you sure she is of age to begin eating meat?" Russet Claw asked.

"I think I would know, since I'm the one who actually takes care of KITS," she snapped.

"Yes, but-"

Soft Heart silenced him with a glare. "River, why don't you go lie down for awhile, take a little nap? You must be very tired."

They're just trying to get rid of me, she realized. But once again, she was too tired to care.

A/N

Sorry for the short chapters! I'm making them so that one thing happens at one time so that I can update faster. I'm so sorry, I realized I didn't update this for A MOON almost. So I pumped out this chapter in like an hour. Yeah, so this chapter has no revision or quality control. So no judge. But helpful criticism is okay.

Surprisingly, this one had the least grammactical errors so far. ~Future Goldenfeather
