"Stop it!" I exclaimed, slightly annoyed. The mustang whinnied and finally stood still. I sighed in relief. I'd been trying to tack up this dumb horse for half an hour but she kept moving whenever I got close to putting something on. Maybe now she would allow me to put on her tack.
I lifted the saddle and moved it overtop her back. Right as I'm about to place it down she sidestepped away and her colourful saddle blanket slid off her back. Her hooves clipped clopped against the concrete floor. "Would you just hold still for a second Sandy?" I pleaded. My arms started to ache from holding onto the saddle. I put it down and grabbed the saddle blanket off the floor.
"Now you're going to stand there like a good horse. You've had your fun causing trouble for me. Just stay right where you are." I murmured softly. I set the blanket back in place and then quickly put on the saddle.
I grinned in triumph and grabbed the bridle. A warm breeze swept through the barn and lifted my cap off my head. The blue cap tumbled and went under the Palomino's hooves. Spooked, Sandy whinnied and jerked back, the bridle fell to the ground. She trampled the hat while I picked up the bridle. I groaned. That was my favourite cap.
"That's it!" I shouted and the horse pulled back. Yes, I have been told a million times by my grandparents not to yell by a horse but at the moment I really didn't care. "I give up Sandy!" I threw up my hands in exasperation.
"All I want to do is go on a ride before Cameron arrives but I guess that won't happen because you keep being fractious, you stupid horse." I ranted. "Maybe I should go get Grandpa Morgan! He won't let you get off so easily you brainless-"
"Why are you arguing with a horse?"
I turned and looked at my little brother, Colton. He watched me curiously with his head cocked to one side.
"Sandy is just being difficult." I said while glaring at her. The horse snorted in response.
"Are you still going to go on a ride with me and Benji?" He questioned, looking at me with big brown eyes. I glance at the Welsh Pony he is holding the reins to. The animal is somehow giving me the same look I am receiving from Colton.
"First of all it's Benji and I." I corrected. Colton rolled his eyes. "And sorry bud but I don't think I will go. Sandy won't stay in one spot long enough for me to get anything on her." I sighed.
My brother huffed. "Here hold Benji." I grabbed the reins from his small hand. He clutched the leather bridle in his hand and walked up to Sandy slowly. He whispered things to her that I couldn't make out. Her ears pricked forward. Like his strategy will work. I tried doing that right at the beginning of all this.
I turned away for five seconds to pat Benji and when I looked back Colton has Sandy ready to go. "Here you go Jordie." He handed over the reins and took back Benji's. Then he walked out of the barn.
"Unbelievable." I muttered and followed him out.
The bright summer sunshine blinded me as I exited the barn. After my eyes adjusted I mounted the horse and Colton and I headed out for our trail ride. We crossed the farmyard and reached the cool shade of the forest. The trees swayed as the wind passed around them and birds chirped from the top branches.
Not to long after, we came across a stream that ran through the forest. It was pretty wide but I didn't think it got any deeper than two feet. I smiled as Colton and I took our mounts over the bridge. Grandpa Morgan, Cam and I had built it. I don't know how long it took us but I remember how proud we were when we had finished it. Cammie and I would come out here every day to play on the bridge. Memories involving the bridge started to flood my mind as we continued on our way.
