Far from the war raging in Erialn, Shalott, the coven leader of a high class witch clan, stood by a window in her room, waiting for a report. Soon, her familiar, a black raven, swooped into the room and landed on her wrist.
"Hello, Corvus." Shalott said, as the bird turned into a young man. "I presume you have news for me?"
"I have reason to believe that your fifth witch has tricked a man into giving her his soul." Corvus informed her.
"Avis told you this?" Shalott asked.
"He did." Corvus said. "That little wretch was so busy bragging about his mistress' deal that he didn't even think about me telling you."
"Then he's a fool, and Evie will have to punish him after I punish her." Shalott said icily. "Do you have any more information on this?"
"Avis claimed that the man was dead set on finding a solution to his problem. A death, it sounded like. He wanted Evie to bring back the deceased. She had no problem doing it, of course, but she asked for his soul in return. He agreed." Corvus answered.
"So he has a year before she takes his last breath, then?" Shallot asked.
Corvus nodded.
"Evie's behavior has been a serious problem lately. She knows that magic is not to be used for trading life for death or vice versa, yet she still goes against my orders. Do you know the name of the man?"
"No. Avis did not say, even if he knew." Corvus said.
"Alright. I will speak to Evie." Shalott said. "You are dismissed, Corvus."
The man nodded, and shifted into that midnight black raven again. He flew out the window, and the witch sighed as she watched him leave.
