Before It Happened

It's funny how when something bad happens you don't really cry. You just feel sort of empty, hollow inside. That's how I feel, i don't know how to comprehend what happened, but i guess that's a good. At least that's what i heard the chief tell some other people. It's fine. Everything will be alright he says but i don't feel fine. Just empty. There is no emotion on what i feel as i watch the two boats float away from the island the village calls home. The two boats carried half the people i cared for most in the world.

My Parents.

They had been killed in last nights raid where the dragons attacked the island. That's all i know & Stoik seems happy that it's all I know, since i was inside with his son when it happened. Me & his son are best friends, ever since we were little well littler, I'd say since we were 3 years old so 3 years.

He's the one who stood beside me now looking out at the boats as well. No one wanted to speak as the ceremony takes place, no one pep from the whole village. As the arrows were fired my parents were sent to Asgard across the bifrost to see Thor.

Everyone had left but me. I just couldn't move like my movements were frozen, like i was frozen. It wasn't until near sunset when hiccup came back & got me to move. I would be staying with him & his dad from now on. We walked back to the hut without saying a word. It wasn't really for a few days before i actually came back to reality. Just like that i was back to being me. Everyone seemed to be happy.

I was walking through the village up the dirt path to the hut a few days later because i had to get some stuff from the village, & neither stoick or Hiccup would go so i did it. I walked by some of the other kids & they were playing a game called dragon slayer, were one or two would be the vikings & the others were dragons they had to kill. I really do not like that game for two reasons.

1. It's stupid to practice something like taking down a dragon when we aren't allowed outside during a raid until we are 10, when we know if we get to be slayers.

2. I think dragons are misunderstood, they never come to kill any of us. They come to take food which we can get more of anyway. Besides the village is over feed.

So i walked right by them as they started bickering over who killed who. I would much rather be drawing or climbing a tree & listening to the world with the music it brings. When i got back i saw Hiccup drawing up another one of his inventions, he's not that good at drawing but he's getting there. Besides his inventions are cool.

"Hey" i said "What's is it this time."

"Machine to sharpen weapons faster & better." he said without looking up at me.

The two of us are pretty smart for our age, 6 years old. We like watching the blacksmith Gobber as he works seeing his techniques & designs. It's really weird for everyone else to watch us do that, but they already think we're weird so there's no stopping us now.

I walked over to the little storage unit we had to put the stuff i had picked up in it when i saw a little stone attached to a piece of string on the little table beside the unit. I grabbed & tossed it at Hiccup, assuming it was his, i was lucky & aimed perfectly to hit him in the head.

"Ow" he said as he looked at the stone than at me with a playful glare.

"You shouldn't leave you stuff lying around." i said to him as he tossed it back to me.

"Ya you shouldn't" he said right back to me with a smile as i caught it. I was confused & looked closer at it to see that the stone had an engraving on it. It had mine & his names on it along with the words best friends. I smiled at him.

"Hiccup what's this for?" I said to him as i slipped it over my head to rest on my neck.

"Your birthday but i couldn't give it to you because....." he said trailing off because of what had happened on my birthday.

"Oh right" i said looking down. I could hear him get up and come give me a hug, for you see my birthday was the day of the last dragon raid.
