My apologies for my extreme slowness. Indoor track just started and I'm kind of a wreck. Also, this is going to be two parts for the same reason.

Medicine. The lungs, the heart, the brain, all kept intact by the miracle of humankind known as medicine.

(Name) was studying hard under the apprenticeship of her uncle so she could one day practice this miracle as it was seen by the common people. By "common people", she meant those who were not educated enough to know how to write, never mind to know how the brain works.

The day was an ordinary one in the context of her apprenticeship; she saw a few hand infections, a toothache, and about 5 gashes that would require suturing. Her uncle entrusted to her the less serious cases in the clinic, while he handled the larger things, like broken bones the occasional surgery, or an overnight stay. Overall, it wasn't a horribly busy day, until right before the clinic was about to close.

(Name) was locking up the two or three rooms they used to examine patients in, when she heard a muffled groan from the third room. As she peered inside, she spotted a boy her age laying on the table, curled up into a ball, and appearing to be in a great deal of pain.

"(Name)! Almost done there?", her Uncle's voice rang through the hall.

"Uncle! There's an injured boy in here! Come quick!" she shouted down the stone corridor.

As her uncle dashed to meet her, (Name) stepped inside the room and peered at the boy. He had a shock of red hair...ears..... and a tail? It took (Name) aback to say the least. People with animal parts were tales of the common folk... right?

She actually jumped back in surprised when a load groan escaped the boy, but she quickly moved out of the way as her uncle moved to inspect the boy. He had absolutely no regard for the fact that the boy had ears and a tail, he just worked.

"(Name)", he said, "Light a candle or two. The sun is going down."

And so (Name) and her uncle got to work on the boy together, he looked like he had been badly beaten or like he might have injured himself in a fall or some sort. Whatever it was, he wasn't suffering as much by the time (Name) sat down to rest.

(Name) was staring at the boy once again when her uncle pulled on his coat, "I'm going to go pick up some supplies for this boy in town. Watch over him. Give him a drink of water if he starts acting up again."

(Name) nodded her understanding as her uncle disappeared around the corner.

"So strange...", she muttered to herself.

His gentle breathing quietly reverberated in the chamber of a room, and it almost lulled her into a partial deprivation of active thought, until he started coughing.

(Name) shot up and attempted to soothe him, but he opened his eyes instantly and sat up, grabbing her by the shoulders.

"Where am I?!" he shook her forcibly, obviously held some state of panicked delirium.

(Name) attempted to free herself from his grip, "In the medical clinic!!! You're safe-ow!"

Her cry seemed to drag him out of his violent outburst and he withdrew, fear filling his heterochromatic eyes which (Name) could not help but stare into.

He withdrew from her, "The medical clinic... I climbed through the window... that's right.", he flopped down onto the table.

(Name) couldn't help herself, "What happened to you?"

The red-head sat up once more to direct his stare at her and for the first time, she saw his maroon ears and tail move, "There are those in this world that completely and totally fear what they cannot comprehend."

A gasp was solicited from her lips at his statement, "The commo- villagers did this to you?"

A nod was all she received as a reply.

"I'm so sorry...."

"My name is Akashi."

"What?"

"My name. It's Akashi."

(Name) was conflicted, he was so polite, but he unnerved her nonetheless.

"I-I'm (Name). Nice to meet you."

"Well (Name)-

Akashi never got to finish his sentence; (Name)'s uncle was back from town.

The sound of the door closing made them both flich a little, but the doctor did not seem to notice or care.

"Son, you're going to need to stay at least one night."

Akashi raised his voice to protest, "I cannot possibly-"

"You 'cannot possibly' do anything if you don't get the proper care and die. Trust me. Whatever it is can wait."

This seemed to quell Akashi's objections for the moment. One could tell that he was agitated because of the way his ears stood at attention and his tail swayed in frustration. However, he offered no further objection as he shifted his gaze from the doctor to (Name) herself, who was busying herself scuffing the floor with her shoes.

(Name) and her uncle had elected to use the overnight room in the clinic so they would be on site, should their patient need them. Now they woke as the sun rose, and began to move about their morning routines they adopted when they had overnight cases such as these.

(Name) found herself strangely eager to see their ward this morning. His gaze had stuck with her as she fell asleep. Those heterochromatic eyes were captivating, scientifically and emotionally.

As she scooped up the last of her breakfast, she shoved on her shoes and made the short journey through the hall of the small clinic. She knocked once and then pushed the door open.

"Good morn- ah! Get back in here!"

He was in the process of climbing out the window, so she had caught him with the guiltiest expression on his face as he was pulled back through the window and back to bed.

"I... I really have to go. I have a family to provide for." he murmured his case as (Name) folded her arms and shook her head.

"You still can't provide for your family if those wounds become infected. It's in everyone's best interests for you to stay." (Name) was as tough of a doctor as her uncle.

Those red and yellow eyes seemed to probe her resolve, "Then come with me. I cannot afford to wait. I'll pay you for your time."

(Name) looked around, "Alright, fine. I'll tell my uncle that I'm taking you to the springs after he makes his examination this morning."

Akashi smiled mysteriously in response, "Thank you."
