Ezera woke to a bright light shining in through the entrance. Now having slept, hunger gnawed at her stomach. The mother dragon, having picked up on this, flew off to find food.
Slowly the other hatchlings woke, yawning tremendously. while her mum was gone Ezera took her first full look of the cave. Gentle rays of light drifted in through the narrow cave entrance. The floors were smooth rock, probably worn from the relentless shifting of its inhabitants. The walls and domed ceiling were rough with gorge marks, most likely from the dragons sharpening their claws. Shallow dips and points imprinted the ceiling made intricate patterns and obscure pictures on the ceiling.
The other hatchlings were having little scuffle, rolling around and wrestling eacjh other. Cautiously, Ezera inched forward hoping to join the games. She rolled on the ground with her sister, and eventually they were all jumping around together having a delightfully fun time.
Finally the dragon mum was back with an elk. She sat expectantly waiting for the hatchlings to eat. Ezera held back her siblings and waited. The dragon cocked her head and looked puzzled. Ezera blew onto her nose, and she sneezed. A small burst of flame came from her nose, scorching the rock floor. Gently, Ezera blew on her nose again, causing another burst of flame to erupt from her snout. This time thoroughly roasting the elk. Ezera triumphantly peeled the skin away from the elk. She thrust a piece of the meat into her mouth and sat back contentedly. Looking over to her siblings she urged them to try it. Tentatively they stepped forward to try it. After one bite, they knew it was delicious. After the hatchlings (including Ezera) had stuffed themselves, the mother dragon went forward and tenderly took a bite. Her eyes flew wide and she devoured the rest of the elk. After that one night, the dragons always roasted their meat. They favour the burned warm flavor more than plain, raw meat.
After their delicious meal, Ezera and her siblings nestled in their warm pile. Their mum put her wings around them as they slept, completely oblivious to the war raging on outside their cosy cave.
A war between dragon and humans.
