Prologue
"Hey Pete, do you want to go back inside?" I asked my little brother and, as always, received no answer. I sighed, resting my head in my hands.
I was listening to my music and he was playing on his stupid game boy. He never pays attention to anything but his dumb little game boy. Sometimes if I talk to him and sit right next to him, he won’t know I’m there because as I said before he is autistic. My twin brother, Landon, doesn’t really like taking care of Pete, my brother, a lot of people think he is annoying. They gave him this stupid nickname “Pe-tard.” I hate it.
But my two best friends Sarah and Zach are always there for me. Zach Dorsey and Sarah Wright. We are all 13 years old. I might, um, like Zach Dorsey a little bit.
Just a little bit.
Okay maybe a lot.
Okay yeah a lot.
But he likes Sarah.
The door swung open.
It was Landon.
“Dad said if I watch Petar- I mean Pete for a bit he will pay me,” he corrected himself. I rolled my eyes. His friends called Pete that and Landon kind of got in the habit of saying it too.
“Fine, but be careful with him okay?” I said and walked past him inside the house.
We live in Nashville, Tennessee. I’m not country though. I’m anything but country. Our family moves a lot because dad travels a lot with work. I used to live New York, and before that, Montana.
We can’t just stay in one place with my mom, because well she died.
She made a lot of mistakes in life. Like smoking and drinking. She died in rehab. It was a pretty hard few weeks for all of us but we had to stay strong for Pete. He was too young to know what was going on.
Even though she did make a lot of mistakes, we all missed her. Before she started smoking we would always have fun and cook and shop together, but that was years ago. Now it’s just me, my brothers, and a dad that barely ever comes home because of work.
That’s pretty much the only family I have besides Austin Mahone, my cousin. He is thirteen too. We didn’t really hang out a lot when we visited them because he hungout with Landon because they are both boys and the same age.
I am 2 minutes younger than Landon. He uses that as an advantage. He is in charge most of the time. One time when he was in charge a few months ago he made me watch the story of the chucky doll thing. I didn’t sleep for weeks.
But for the past few weeks, he seemed sad. He didn’t talk much. He didn’t eat much. He wasn’t happy. He never watches any scary movies. He just lies down in his room, and locks his door. I tried to ask him about it but then he gets mad and says it’s nothing then runs back up to his room.
